Survey123 for ArcGIS: Accurate Field Data Collection Made Easy

Survey123 for ArcGIS is an application for collecting data in the field using forms that are simple, powerful, and intuitive. You can create a survey in a browser and share it with your project group (or anyone at Clemson University) to use for creating data for your project. You can also download an app to your iOS or Android device and use it to download your survey for working in areas without internet (or in airplane mode to conserve battery). Survey123 is integrated with ArcGIS Online, so you can quickly map your data and use it in your project story maps.

Accessing Survey123

You can log into Survey123 (as well as ArcGIS Online) using your standard Clemson credentials.

  • To begin, go to www.survey123.arcgis.com

  • Click the Sign In button at the upper right.

  • In the pop up window, click the button on the bottom to Sign In with Enterprise Account.

  • Type clemson in the box and click Continue.

  • Click the box to sign in Using Your Clemson University Account.

  • Enter your Clemson username and password and click Login.

Creating a New Survey

It only takes a few steps to create a survey. You'll need to set the title, add tags and a description, and then you can start adding questions and designing the survey!

  • Once you are logged in to Survey123, click on +Create New Survey in the upper-left corner.

  • In the drop-down menu, click on From Survey123 Web.

  • Enter a name for your survey, some tags which describe the themes and associated groups, and a concise summary. The summary should include, at a minimum, the group or organization who created the survey and the intended purpose.

  • You will then see the interface for adding and rearranging questions to your survey.

  • When your survey is complete, click on the Save button to keep your changes.

Sharing Your Survey

Once your survey is complete, you need to publish it. Once the survey is published, you can no longer edit it. Make sure your survey is complete and works properly before publishing. You can always save a copy, publish the copy, and keep the original in case you need to make changes!

  • In the Design tab of your survey, click Save to keep changes (if needed).

  • Click Save As and save it as a copy (if desired).

  • Click Publish in the lower right. A dialog will open making sure you know that you will no longer be able to edit the survey.

  • Click Publish again in the dialog.

  • You will see this window, letting you know the survey is now live.

When you create a survey, it is visible only to you by default. You will need to share your survey with your organization (i.e., Clemson University) before anyone can use it. Once it's shared with the University, anyone with a link to your survey will be able to log in and start using the survey.

  • From the main page, click on a survey you have created to go to the Overview page for that survey.

  • Then click on Collaborate in the upper right corner, where you will see the sharing settings.

  • Check the box to Share this survey to: Members of my organization. Click Save.

The survey can now be searched and found from anyone at Clemson using the tags, title, and summary you provided. A better way to share it, though, is to get the hyperlink for the survey. You can send the link to anyone with a Clemson ID and they, too, can use the survey.

  • Click the Hyperlink symbol to view the survey URL.

Using Your Survey Via a Web Browser

Anyone with the link to your survey can open it in a browser, log in using their Clemson ID, and add data to your survey. Let's try it out!

  • Click on the SurveyURL that you opened in the last step to view your survey.

  • Copy the URL.

  • Open a private window or incognito window (depending on your browser), paste the Survey URL, and go to the page.

What you will see is that you need to log in again to access the survey. Again, anyone with a Clemson username and password will be able to add data using your survey.

Adding Data to Your Survey Using the Survey123 App

Your survey can be used in a web browser on your phone, laptop, desktop, or tablet. Downloading the Survey123 app adds capability for downloading your survey and working offline. This is useful if you plan on going to remote or undeveloped areas where you will not have internet access.

  • Log into the Apple App Store or Google Play store, search for Survey123 for Arcgis, download and install it to your device.

  • Open the app and log in using your Clemson username and password.

  • Once logged in, click on a survey you have created to download it to your device.

You will now be able to use it just like in a browser, but no internet connection is needed.
