Data Creation for Field Data Collection

Create the domain and options for your next field which BDF_Status with two options Positive and Negative.

Congratulations. You just finished creating the template for data collection on your feature class.

Publishing your feature classes as services in ArcGIS Online

Now that you have created your templates for collection of feature class, you need to publish it to ArcGIS Online so Collector for ArcGIS can access it. This will allow you to share the data collection process with the collaborators on your map or even with the public if you're interested in participatory mapping.

In ArcMap, remove any other layer to have just Survey as you only dataset in your data frame.

Sign in to your ArcGIS Online account.

- Go to: File - Sign In. Login with your arcgis account.

- Your last step in your data design is to assign the domains you have created to fields in your feature classes. To do this, go to: Data Management Tools - Domains - Assign Domain to Field. (Step 3)

Let's see how it works for the type_fauna field.

  • Input table: select Survey

  • Field Name: Crops

  • Domain Name: type_crops

Click OK. This will assign the domain with the four codes (squirrel, insect, bird, person) to your art feature class.

- Create a point feature classes:

- Survey. Add the following fields:

    1. Inspector_Name - Type: Text

    2. Crops - Type: Text

    3. BDF_Status - Type: Text

    4. Date - Type: Date

    5. Comments - Type: Text

- Now we will restrict the data entry for some of the fields by creating domains at the geodatabase level. Let's do this for the first field, crops. In order to do this, open your ArcToolbox and navigate to Data Management Tools - Domains - Create Domain. (Step 1)

    • Input workspace: navigate to your geodatabase

    • Domain name: type_crops

    • Domain Description: Type of crops

    • Field Type: text

    • Domain Type: coded (as opposed to a range for numeric data)

    • Split Policy: default

    • Merge Policy: default

- Once you create the domain, you need to assign values to it. Go to Data Management Tools - Domains - Add Coded Value to Domain. (Step 2) This will be the drop-down menu options that collectors will select instead of having to type field attributes constantly. This is a great time-saving technique used very often for data collection.

For example, for type_crops, there will be five options that the collector can choose from:

- peanut

- corn

- soybean

- cotton

- other

You need to enter each one of these codes for the type_crops attribute (or domain). Let's do this for the first coded value for type of fauna and you will repeat the rest.

    • Input workspace: your file geodatabase

    • Domain Name: select type_fauna

    • Code Value: squirrel

    • Code Description: squirrel

Creating your own data collection features: Invasive Species

You will be creating your own features for data collection: Invasive Species at Clemson! In order to do this, you will go through the following steps.

Creating the datasets, fields, and domains in ArcGIS Desktop

Open ArcCatalog inside of ArcMap, and follow the steps below:

- Create a file geodatabase: Mycollectedfeaturesby_YourInitials.gdb

- You can change your Basemap to one that offers more contrast with your data. On the left hand-side of your screen, click on Basemap and select the one you think it fits better, for example, Imagery.

Changing the pop-up window

Click on one of the symbols in your map and notice the default pop-up window. By default, Arcgis Online displays every field from your attribute table.

When designing your interactive online map, you want to think about the functionality of your pop-up window for each feature layer. Think of the attributes that you would like to display and how you would like to display them. With ArcGIS Online, you can display numeric attributes as charts. You can also display photos, videos or website urls.

To change the pop-up window, click on the ... below your, and select Configure Pop-up. A new panel appears on the left of your screen: the Pop-up Properties panel.

- Change the Pop-up Title to: "Invasive Species Survey"

- Pop-up Contents:

- Display: A list of field attributes

- Click on Configure Attributes. Change the title for BDF_Status to say BDF Status by clicking the Field Alias. Make sure the Use 1000 Separator box is checked for this field. Click OK.

Save your Map following the guidelines from the image below.

- Item Description:

- Summary: Invasive Species Data Collection at Clemson University by (your full name).

- Tags: crops, Clemson

- Sharing: Everyone (public). This will allow you to publish your map in your website.

- Click Publish

Creating your Web Map for data collection on the field

Now that you have a new dataset that you want to collect published as a service in your ArcGIS Online account, you are going to create a web map that calls it so you can access it from Collector on the field.

Go to Arcgis.com and sign in with your ArcGIS Online account. Go to My Content and select Create Map. A new window opens up.

Add data your map

Select Add, Search for layers.

- Find: type crops

- In: select My Organization

Click Go. You will find any feature dataset that was published in our Clemson organization. Find yours by searching your initials and click Add. Repeat the same step by searching for fishnet.

Click Done Adding Layers.

Changing the symbology

To change the symbology of your feature service, make sure the panel at the left of your screen is showing the Content of

your map. Browse over your Invasive_species_survey_by_PM layer and click the Change Style button below it.

Click on Symbols. Here you can change the shape of your symbol and color. Select the Fill option and choose a purple color.

Click OK. Press the Done button to go back to your map.

- My Hosted Services (Clemson University)

- Service name: change it to Invasive_species_survey_by_YourInitials (no spaces).

- Capabilities: check Feature Access and uncheck Tiled Mapping

- Feature Access: check Create, Delete, Query, Sync and Update. This will give full control to create and update

features to your collaborators in this feature service.

- You will see the window on the right, click on "Sign with Enterprise Account" - You will be asked to Enter your ArcGIS organization's URL. Enter clemson and click Continue.

- Select "Using your Clemson University Account"

Publishing features

- Publish your feature class. Go to: File - Share As - Service.

Click Save Map. Let's take a look at the settings for your map. Go to the About tab at the left and click More Details...

Go back to my content and change the settings for your editing capabilities on each layer:

- Survey: click Show Item Details.

Under Layers, Click on the inversed arrow next to Survey and Enable Attachments.

Select Edit and make sure you check the Track Edits box: Keep track of who created and last updated features. Click Save.

Congratulations. Your map is ready for use in Collector. Go to your device and make sure you can connect to your account and view your map to collect features.
