Getting Started with OpenStreetMap

To participate in the mapping, you need to register an account with OpenStreetMap (OSM). Then, you will complete a walkthrough to get you familiar with creating map features.

First, head to OpenStreetMap www.openstreetmap.org

Click Sign Up in the upper right corner of the page.

Contributing to Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) Mapping Projects

The Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) focuses on aid for humanitarian projects and economic development using OpenStreetMap (OSM), which is an open source, community-driven mapping platform where anyone can contribute. OSM can be utilized by disaster relief agencies to map homes and structures destroyed by earthquakes or hurricanes and to quickly map road networks in undeveloped areas.

Enter your email address, choose a username and password, and click Sign Up to create your account. Take note of your OSM username.

Log in to OpenStreetMap using your username and password.

Zoom in anywhere on the map until the Edit button is no longer grayed out.

Click the Edit dropdown, and select Edit with iD (in-browser editor)

Click to Start the Walkthrough. This will familiarize you with how to create features in OpenStreetMap. It takes 5-10 minutes to complete.

Mapping the Impacted Areas

Once you have completed the tutorial, you can head back to the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) project page

Go to http://tasks.hotosm.org/ and click on START MAPPING.

In the search box, type in 4147.

Click on the #4147 task

Read carefully through the description and instructions for what features need to be mapped, how to tag features, and if polygons require squaring/rounding, and important information. Ask for clarification if needed!

In the next page, click on any of the white boxes shown in the map and click on Start Mapping.

Choose iD Editor as your editor of choice and click on START EDITING.

Choose Line tool for mapping roads and Area tool for mapping buildings.

Tag your features (roads or buildings) from the left side panel. Use your judgment to determine what type of road or building you have mapped.

Save your edits and click on Upload on the left side panel.

Congratulations! You now have contributed to a humanitarian projects!
