Introduction to Cloud Mapping for WISE

Configuring the pop-up window

On your map, click on any of the state. Notice the pop-up window displays all the fields in its attribute table. Not all of this information is necessary in the pop-up window. To change this, click on three dots next to the Renewable Consumption layer and select Configure Pop-Up. A new window appears where you can customize the contents of the pop-up window for this layer.

Pop-up Title is where you change the Title of the window. Change it to "Nuclear Energy to Total Energy Consumption"

Pop-up Contents is where you can select and format the attributes that get displayed. To change this, click on Configure Attributes. In the new window that appears, do the following:

- Uncheck from Display everything except State, Total Energy, Coal, Natural Gas, Petroleum, Nuclear Electric Power.

Click OK.

Pop-up Media is where you can add images that you collected with your data or charts that read numeric information from your attribute table. Click on the ADD tab and select Bar Chart. In the window that appears, add the following:

- Title: Nuclear vs Total

- Chart Fields: check Nuclear Electric Power and Total Energy.

Click OK to save this setting. Click SAVE POP-UP to save all the settings for your configuration window.

Check out your results.

Practice changing the configuration window for your other layers.

Saving your map

On the top menu, click Save - Save As.

Introduction to ArcGIS Online

ArcGIS Online is a web-based GIS platform that allows for collaborative creation and sharing of GIS data, maps, and web mapping applications. Many geospatial analytical capabilities of ArcGIS Desktop are integrated in ArcGIS Online, with the difference that the only software needed is a web browser (and Internet connection!).

In this lecture, we will use your crowd-sourcing efforts with Collector and create exciting interactive mash-up maps. We will embed these maps in your own website and also create powerful web mapping applications, 3D scenes, and interactive presentations.

Creating a map in ArcGIS Online

To access ArcGIS Online, open up a web browser (Firefox, Chrome or Internet Explorer) and type the following URL: www.arcgis.com. On the top right corner, click Sign in. In the screen that appears, type the Username and Password that Palak gave you last Tuesday. Click the Sign In button.

In the top menu, click MAP to open a new map webpage. We will be creating three web maps as follows:

1. Map of United States with all types of power plants

2. Map of United States showing proportion of energy coming from renewable energy sources (renewable energy/ total energy)

3. Map of United States showing proportion of energy coming from nuclear energy sources (nuclear energy/ total energy)

In order to create these maps, we need some data for the energy sources. So, our next step will be to find data on ArcGIS Online.

a) Creating a Map of United States with all types of power plants

Adding data from ArcGIS Online

Click the Add button , Search for layers, and follow these settings:

1. Add the renewable facilities layer

- Find: Biomass Solar

- In: ArcGIS Online

Select the US Biomass, Solar and Wind Facilities (by waauch)) by clicking Add.

2. Add the nuclear facilities layer

- Find: nuclear

- In: ArcGIS Online

Select the US Geothermal, Hydro and Nuclear Facilities (by waauch) by clicking Add.

Then Click on Done Adding Layers

Change the Contents view to Legend. You will see that all the facilities whether solar or nuclear

have the same symbol. Go back to Content so we can manipulate the data.

Changing the basemap

At the top menu, click Basemap, and select Imagery to be able to facilities more clearly. Select other basemaps to see the different options available to you. Change your Basemap to Light Grey Canvas.

Changing the symbology

Let's look at changing the symbology for your energy facilities layer. Click on the Legend view to understand the current symbology. As you can see, it is using the same color . Let's change that based on the type of the facility.

Return to the Content view and hover on the first layer there which is US Geothermal, Hydro and Nuclear Facilities. Then Press Change Style. In the Change Style window, notice the attribute to show is Show Location only, lets change it to PrimaryF_1 (type of energy facility).

For drawing style, choose the first option: Type (Unique Symbols), by clicking on OPTIONS. Let's change the symbology of each type

of energy based on their nature.

For Hydro- Click on the symbol left to it and change it Light Blue and then change the symbol size to 10.

For Nuclear- Click on the symbol left to it and change it Dark grey and then change the symbol size to 10.

For Geothermal- Click on the symbol left to it and change it Orange and then change the symbol size to 10.

Click OK and then press Done.

Follow the same steps to change the Symbology for US Biomass, Solar and Wind Facilities layer, lets change the color for Biomass to Brown , Solar to Yellow and Wind to Navy Blue.

Click OK and then press Done.

Click on the Legend button on the right. You will see the different classes created for each group of values.

Saving your map

On the top menu, click Save - Save.

Click SAVE MAP.

You created your first map which has all the types of energy that are used to generate power in the United States and their locations of their facilities. Now, lets create our second map.

b) Map of United States showing proportion of energy coming from renewable energy sources (renewable energy/ total energy)

Lets add another dataset from ArcGIS Online to get the values for how much the renewable energy is consumed by per capita

in the United States.

Adding data from ArcGIS Online

1. Renewable energy consumption per capita

Find: renewable consumption

- In: ArcGIS Online

Select the Renewable energy consumption (by johnyHack) by clicking Add.

Changing the symbology

Let's look at changing the symbology for your renewable energy layer to get the proportion of renewable energy consumed to total energy by each state in US. Click on the Legend view to understand the current symbology. As you can see, it only has the value of renewable energy consumption value. Let's change that based on the

total energy consumption.

Return to the Content view and hover on the first layer there which is Renewable Energy Consumption layer. Then Press Change Style. In the Change Style window, notice the attribute to show is Renewable Energy.

For drawing style, choose the first option: Counts and Amounts (Color), by clicking on OPTIONS.

For the divided by option, choose: Total Energy

For Classify Data, choose: Manual Breaks with 5 classes

For Transparency, move the bar to 25%

- Click OK and then press Done.

- Lets turn off the US Geothermal, Hydro and Nuclear Facilities layer

- Move the US Biomass, Solar and Wind Facilities above the Renewable Energy Consumption layer to see the locations of the facilities over the states layer.

Saving your map

On the top menu, click Save - Save As.

Click SAVE MAP.

c) Map of United States showing proportion of energy coming from nuclear energy sources (nuclear energy/ total energy)

As we already have the data needed to create this map, lets get started with this by:

- Turning on the US Geothermal, Hydro and Nuclear Facilities layer and

- Turning off the US Biomass, Solar and Wind Facilities layer

Changing the symbology

Now, Let's look at changing the symbology for your nuclear energy layer to get the proportion of renewable energy consumed to total energy by each state in US. Click on the Legend view to understand the current symbology. As you can see, it only has the value of renewable energy consumption value. Let's change that based on the total energy consumption.

Return to the Content view and hover on the first layer there which is Renewable Energy Consumption layer. Then Press Change Style. In the Change Style window, notice the attribute to show is Nuclear Electric Power.

- Move the US Geothermal, Hydro and Nuclear Facilities above all the layers in the content to see the locations of the facilities over the states layer.
