Map Tour: Historical Points

Sometimes you can create story maps from scratch. For example, take a look at this map showing historical points in Daufuskie. Let's transform this paper map into an interactive tour that people can check out from their phone as they navigate the island.Login into your ArcGIS Online account. Go to Content. In the left section, click Create - Web App - Create a New Web App.

Follow the settings on the right and change the author to your name.Click Done.

This will set up an empty template for your map tour. In the window that appears select the Advanced options button (two wheels) and in the new window that appears, click Start a new Tour. The tour map is created and ready for you to add tour stops.

Edit the subtitle of your map tour by clicking the Edit me! button on the top left corner: Experience Daufuskie Island through this interactive Map Tour!

Change your basemap to your preference.

Adding a Tour Stop: Freeport Marina General Store

Click the Add button at the bottom center menu.

Information:

- Name: Freeport Marina General Store

- Caption: On a site of a plantation called Freeport that was growing Indigo on Daufuskie in the 1700's. The Plantation house sat where the general store is today and the slave cabins were on the site of the rental cabins.

Location:

On the Search box, type Freeport Marina Daufuskie.

Click Add tour point.

Do this for two other points on the map: Mt Carmel Baptist Church and Janie Hamilton School.

You can change the order by clicking the Organize button. Once you have it ready, let's do a final touch changing the overall settings.

Click the SETTINGS button on the top center menu.

Choose the best layout that you would like to have for your map tour.

Under Extent, click on Use Map Tour extent. Click Apply to see your changes.

Click the SAVE button on the top menu. If you don't have any errors. Click SHARE. In the Share your Tour window, select Share publicly. You should have a short link like this: http://arcg.is/2f2eZHu

Survey123: Favorite Places in Daufuskie

Survey123 allows you to collect and/or crowdsource your spatial data with no GIS experience required! In the steps below you will be creating a form that asks people to pick their favorite place in Daufuskie, just like this one.

To open the app, go to: https://survey123.arcgis.com/

Sign in with your arcgis online account. Click on My Surveys -> Create a New Survey -> Using the web designer.

Name: Daufuskie Memories by YourName

Tags: daufuski, clemson

First question

Select Singleline Text

Label: What is your favorite place in Daufuskie Island?

Hint: Name of the place (e.g. Mt Carmel Baptist Church)

Click Save

Second question

Go to the Add tab. Select GeoPoint

Label: Where in the island is this place?

Hint: Move the pin to the desire point in the island or type the address on the search box.

Default Map: Select OpenStreetMap from the dropdown menu. As home location, navigate to the island.

Validation: Check this is a required question.

Click Save

Third question

Go to the Add tab. Select Singleline Text

Label: Why is your favorite place?

Hint: Feel free to describe the beauty or memory that took place

Validation: Do not check this is a required question

Click Save

Fourth question

Go to the Add tab. Select Single Choice

Label: What is your gender?

Hint: Choose only one option

Choices: Female, male, other

Validation: Do not check this is a required question

Click Save

Fifth question

Go to the Add tab. Select Number

Label: How young are you?

Hint: Example: 55

Validation: Check this must be an integer. Min value 4 and max value 120

Click Save

Click Preview to see your form. You can preview it in many different devices. If it looks OK, then click the Publish button on the bottom right corner. Just remember you cannot change the survey once you publish it. Click the Share symbol on the top right corner and answer the survey 3 or 4 times.

Take a look a the result by looking at the Analyze and Data tabs.
