GIS Data Creation and Management

1. Introduction

After learning the basics of GIS terminology and getting our feet wet with the software interface, we now can take a step ahead and learn about two essential topics is GIS: spatial reference systems and data creation. Any GIS professional should be familiar with spatial reference systems. In this workshop, you will learn the fundamentals of geographic and projected coordinate systems and datums. After that, you will learn how to create GIS data from scratch. So far you learned how to preview and symbolize data that you did not generate.

Goals

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to :

  • Create a new project in ArcGIS Pro

  • Choose the right projection for your map

  • Import tabular data into GIS

  • Create GIS Data

  • Edit GIS Data

Getting the software

Option A) If you have ArcGIS Pro installed on your local machine, you are all set (instructions for downloading and installing ArcGIS Pro on your machine are here)

OPTION B) If you are using Virtual Access through My Clemson Apps, copy the downloaded folder to your Documents folder.

OPTION C) If you are using Virtual Desktop, you can access your Downloads folder by going to C:\Users\"your Clemson username"\Downloads
