Team 2 Exercise

Follow the following steps for your team's exercise:

Team 1 Exercise

Follow the following steps for your team's exercise:

1. Determine direction of river flow.

You will be given printed topographic maps with rivers marked A and B.

- Examine River A between a start and end point in the map that you choose.

- Record the compass direction that you think it will flow (for example, east, northwest).

- Examine River B and try to determine which way it is flowing.

- Record the compass direction you think it will flow.

2. Find your rivers on Google Earth

- Click the Search button. Google Earth will fly to the region below.

- Use the navigation tool on the right to zoom out and explore the region.

- Find River A. You will use the base image and printed maps to find the river.

- Move around Google Earth to see your river in 3D . Inspect the landscape to determine the direction water will flow.

- You can tilt in Google Earth to get the following view:

In what compass direction is the river flowing?

How would you describe the shape of the channel? Is it straight, is it meandering?

Does the channel shape change as you move upstream or downstream?

- Repeat these steps for River B. Type in the coordinates from the table above.

- Explore the landscape and try to determine which way the river is flowing. Use all the information you can!

- Does water flow in the same direction as you predicted it would? Why or why not?

- Take a photo of your team in front of the Sandbox with your landscape.

After Topography has been built

- Build the topography for your chosen river (A or B) using the topographic map as a guide.

- Make the water flow in the SandBox.

- Make a record of the direction water flows in your model.

Was the flow direction easier or harder to determine for River B than River A? Why or why not?

How would you describe the shape of the channel? Is it straight, is it meandering?

Does the channel shape change as you move upstream or downstream?

Compare the terrain around each river (for example, how steep is it?) How does the topography around the river influence the river's shape? Summarize your observations.

3. Use the Sandbox to create a topography of the river site

- The aim is to build the closest match of the map.

- Your group can decide on whether to recreate River A or River B.

To Finish:

Add stops to your story map which describe the Sandbox and Google Earth activities and your findings. Add exciting pictures, search for YouTube videos -- be creative!
