In this activity you will be going out in the field to collect geographic data using Collector for ArcGIS application. You will get other students and people on campus to take a simple survey about their water use habits and record their answers using the Collector app on your smartphone or a tablet to record their responses and location. Then we will sync the responses to the cloud and view them in ArcGIS Online, a cloud-based mapping application.

Collector is a free app that allows you to collect or update your geospatial data with any iOS or Android device directly into your ArcGIS Online account. It allows you to log your current location, and put the data you capture to work so you can make more informed and timely decisions. It allows you to use maps anywhere to ground-truth your data, make observations, and respond to events. It makes collecting data with a group of people very easy.

Advantages

- Option for offline data collection

- Multiple editors

You should now see the survey questions.

For each person you interview, ask them their hometown and enter it as City, ST. Some questions will require you to enter a numeric value, and others will have you select one of a few responses. Enter answers for all the questions, either typing in the answers or using the dropdown menus.

- Once you have answers from the questions, you need to add the point to the map. You will see your approximate location, as a blue circle. Tap on the map and you add a smaller, light blue circle to the map, which is the location of the data point you are creating. Tap on the map in the exact location you are standing.

Once you have the location and survey completed, tap the check mark in the upper left corner to send your updates to the collective map.

Updates can take a little bit of time to post, depending on your wireless connection. Make sure your edits are saved after each data point collected. To ensure that your latest update gets posted, close Collector and open it again. Navigate to your map and look for your edit.
