Story Maps for Globalization and Social Change

Story Maps are web applications that allow you to combine the functionality of interactive maps with multimedia content (photos, videos, audio, timelines) into one unique app. They are templates of code ready to consume your web maps and online content. You can view examples here: http://storymaps.arcgis.com/en/app-list/

Clemson students with support from CCGT have created their own story maps: http://www.clemsongis.org/projects (check out Envisioning Risk, Planning for Tomorrow's Climate, or the story map we will be creating during this session: Global Social Progress.)

1. Examples of Great Story Maps

Some examples to spark your creativity can be found at the links below. These are great uses of multimedia and mapping which draw in the user! They also demonstrate some of the different layouts and functionality available through various templates.

2. Our Goal: Communicating about Globalization and Social Change

In this tutorial, we will be creating a story map with the goal of communicating the topic of globalization and social change. Our main subjects will be:

- What is globalization?

-How new is globalization

-What has led to increased globalization?

-What are some positive and negative impacts of globalization?

-What is the future of globalization?

3. Interactive Map: Globalization and Social Change

One of the sections in the story map will be an interactive map of Global Social Progress around the world. You created this map in the last session. If you need to review the lesson, please click here.

To access the map you created in the last session, follow these steps:

Logging In

  • Go to arcgis.com and click Sign in. You will see the window below (#1).

  • Click on "Enterprise Login" (#1).

  • You will be asked to Enter your ArcGIS organization's URL. Type clemson in the box and click Continue (#2).

  • Click on the blue box that says "Clemson University" (#3).

  • Log in using your standard Clemson username and password (#4).

4. Creating a story map: Globalization and Social Progress

The map you created the last session will be a part of the story map, which is our ultimate goal.

Once you are signed in, you should see your name on the right corner. Go to Content at the top of the page and click on it.

Under your Content, under Folders, click on All My Content. Find the web map we created last week. Make your map is public (shared with everyone).

Once you opened your web map, click on Open in Map Viewer. When the map opens, on the upper part of the map window, click on Share.

In the Share pop-up window, click on CREATE A WEB APP. Now, click on Configurable Apps, click on Build a Story Map, and choose Story Map Cascade.

4.1 Cover Section

Specify a title, tags, and a summary for the new web app as below:

Title: Globalization and Social Progress by **your name**

Tags: globalization, social progress

Summary: A story map of Globalization and Social Progress across the world

Save in folder: navigate to the directory you want to save the story map.

Make sure the box next to Share this app in the same way as the map (Everyone, Clemson University) is checked. Then click on DONE.

Remove your name from the title of your story map(#1). Click on Add your image or video(#2). Now, search for videos about globalization. You can open YouTube and type globalization in the search bar. We have chosen this video for this assignment. Video URL: https://youtu.be/x1wLbJoSmR0

Click on Link to Content (#3). Under Link to an image or video on the web, copy and paste the video URL in the box. Click on the checkmark.

In the caption of the map, type: "Source: The Social Progress Imperative"

We will change the order of the sections later so that your interactive map is not the first element of your story map right after your landing page.

4.2 First sections: What Is Social Progress? section: What Is Social Progress?

Click on the plus sign to add a section. Click on Title.

In the Title box, type "What Is Social Progress?"

Click on Add media to change the background of your title. Here, we will choose a simple black jpeg file as the background. To find this background, open a browser and search for "black background". You can also use this photo from our search result. Download the photo on your computer.

Now, click on the plus sign again and add a Text session and copy and paste the text below:

"The Social Progress Imperative defines social progress as "the capacity of a society to meet the basic human needs of its citizens, establish the building blocks that allow citizens and communities to enhance and sustain the quality of their lives, and create the conditions for all individuals to reach their full potential."

4.3 Next sections: Dimensions of the Social Progress Index?

In Enter a title box, type: Dimensions of the Social Progress Index

Click on Add media to change the background of your title. Here, we will choose a simple black jpeg file as the background. To find this background, open a browser and search for "black background". You can also use this photo from our search result. Download the photo on your computer.

Click on Browse and navigate to where you save the photo. Now, copy and paste the following text underneath the title.

"We define social progress in a comprehensive and inclusive way. Social progress is the capacity of a society to meet the basic human needs of its citizens, establish the building blocks that allow citizens and communities to enhance and sustain the quality of their lives, and create the conditions for all individuals to reach their full potential.

This definition reflects an extensive and critical review and synthesis of both the academic and practitioner literature in a wide range of development topics. The Social Progress Index framework focuses on three distinct (though related) questions:

Does a country provide for its people’s most essential needs?

Are the building blocks in place for individuals and communities to enhance and sustain wellbeing?

Is there opportunity for all individuals to reach their full potential?"

Now, click on the plus sign again and this add an Immersive section.

For the title, enter: Basic Human Needs

In the test box, copy and paste this text: "Assesses how well a country provides for its people’s essential needs by measuring access to nutrition and basic medical care, if they have access to safe drinking water, if they have access to adequate housing with basic utilities, and if society is safe and secure."

Click on Add media to add a picture for the background. We will use this photo. Feel free to use your own.

Now, click on the plus sign again and this add another Immersive section.

For the title, enter: Foundations of Wellbeing

In the test box, copy and paste this text: "Assesses whether citizens have access to basic education, can access information and knowledge from both inside and outside their country, and if there are the conditions for living healthy lives. Foundations of Wellbeing also measures a country’s protection of its natural environment: air, water, and land, which are critical for current and future wellbeing."

Click on Add media to add a picture for the background. We will use this photo. Feel free to use your own.

Now, click on the plus sign again and this add another Immersive section.

For the title, enter: Opportunity

In the test box, copy and paste this text: "Measures the degree to which a country’s citizens have personal rights and freedoms and are able to make their own personal decisions as well as whether prejudices or hostilities within a society prohibit individuals from reaching their potential. Opportunity also includes the degree to which advanced forms of education are accessible to those in a country who wish to further their knowledge and skills, creating the potential for wide-ranging personal opportunity. One of the distinguishing features of the Social Progress Index framework is that it encompasses Opportunity, an aspect of human wellbeing that is often overlooked or separated in thinking about social progress from more foundational and material needs such as nutrition and healthcare."

Click on Add media to add a picture for the background. We will use this photo. Feel free to use your own.
