Esri Business Analyst Web App: New tapas bar at Clemson

Esri Business Analyst Web App allows you to have the power of business analyst in the cloud. All you need is a browser and your ArcGIS Online organizational account with Clemson.

To get started login into BAO by opening a browser and typing: http://bao.arcgis.com

Click on Create a new project and type: Downtown Clemson.

In the Search box on the top right corner, type Clemson, SC and notice how it zooms to downtown Clemson. Move the point to your favorite location at Clemson. Rename your point Tapas Bar.

Drive Times

Start with Rings and look at the results. Is this useful?

We are interested in people who will drink wine, so let's use Walk Time: 5, 10, 15 minutes. Select use bands. Bands are study areas with no overlap. They provide the traditional ring study area but without duplication of overlapping areas. These are useful for understanding the incremental market changes as you move away from a center location.

Infographics

Click on the Infographics button. Notice the statistics highlighted for your area. You can change the infographic or create a custom one by selecting the options at the bottom of your window.

You can also export your infographic data as a web page (html) or as an image.

Report

Select Restaurant Market Potential. How many expected number of adults went to family restaurant/steak house in the last 6 months?

Suitability Analysis

Add three locations in your map: name them Tapas Bar Option 1, tapas bar option 2, and tapas bar option 3. Create a 5 min walking area for each one of them.

Go to Create Maps from Data - Suitability Analysis. A new window appears. Click on Get Started. Select Start with Items on map. In the window that appears, click Next.

Select variables for criteria:

- Behaviors - Grocery & Alcoholic Beverages - 2016 Consumed wine in last 30 days at restaurant

- Spending - Entertainment - 2016 Entertainment/Recreation, 2016 Dating Services

Click Apply. Take a look at the results and see how you can change the weights (importance of each variable to define your criteria).

Click on the View Results Table to see the final score by type for each site.

Sharing your Map

You can share your map in a live format by clicking on the Share Map button on the right. Give it a title, description, and tag. Open your map in Arcgis.com by going to My Content, BAO - My maps.

Site Suitability Analysis

Incorporate competitive and complementary locations to make better suitability decisions. For example, factor in how many other sandwich places are within the trade area of a potential sandwich place you want to invest in.

Use site attributes added from the site details panel. Calculate weighted scores for each potential location and review their ranks from most suitable to least suitable location.

Improved infographics with support for your own data

Create more informative infographics by using location attributes such as number of parking spaces, rent, and more. Add site pictures and present market information with more attractive infographics. Include your own business data more easily and combine them with Esri Demographics content. Select, move, rotate, and re-size elements within the infographic panels more efficiently.

Bring in your own data in reports

Using your own business data is a critical part of your market analysis. You will be able to use your own data in custom reports and infographics and experience an improved custom data setup workflow. For example, you can easily bring in your sales data by zip code and create a custom report that includes your sales data for a 5-minutes drive time area.

Step by step guides:

Esri Business Analyst Desktop Extension and Data

Business Analyst in ArcMap has two different versions: a program extension (like Spatial Analyst) with a set of tools, and a program data (data that needs installation). Make sure to follow our instructions to have both in your computer: http://www.clemsongis.org/business-analyst

Open ArcMap. Notice the window that appears: esri Business Analyst Desktop Message Center. Click the 2016 Business Analyst.mxd document.

To activate the extension, click on Customize - Extensions and check Business Analyst Standard. This will activate the program extension. If the Business and Facilities layers are missing from your map document (!), this means the Business Analyst data has not been installed properly in your computer.

Zoom to the Clemson area. Uncheck everything and leave only the Counties layer turned on. In the Business Analyst toolbar, click the BA window. There are three primary ArcGIS windows to familiarize yourself with that are important to Business Analyst.

    • The Business Analyst window is a centralized location for common tools and toolbars. It also helps manage and retrieve your work.

    • The ArcToolbox window allows you to access all the wizard-driven features as geoprocessing tools. The GP tools are great ways to automate your workflows and create models or custom tools.

    • The Catalog window contains a special section called the Business Analyst Repository. This folder location contains all your saved work, projects, report templates, and BDS layers.

In the Business Analyst menu, select Store Setup - Create New Store Layer. click Next. In the next window, select Create an empty layer so that you can add the points directly in your map. Notice all the other options.

Finding Existing Business

Let's use the Local Business search instead. Type station and click the search button. Uncheck all the categories except for Electric Charging Station. Click Finish. You can do this with grocery stores, banks, etc. You have over 13 Million stores updated per year that you can access!

Calculating Trade Areas

Click on Trade Area - Drive Time Areas. For the layer that contains your stores, select the electric charging station data that you created. Leave the defaults. Click Next.

In the Drive Time Trade Areas window, set up the following criteria:- 3 trade areas: 5, 10, 15 minutes as standard drive time. Leave defaults.

Name the new Trade Area: Drive Time Areas from charging stations. Check create reports. Summarize data for individual features. Click Next.

As report template, select:

- Consumer Spending: Automotive Aftermarket Expenditures

- Tapestry Segmentation - Tapestry Segmentation Area Profile.

To add new service areas, click on Business Analyst - Trade Area - Create New Trade Area. In the Trade Area Wizard, select Drive Time area, check Donut.

Donut creates nonoverlapping concentric rings, or donut bands.

Remove Overlap - use Thiessen polygons to remove overlap between ring polygons.

Evaluating New Sites

A very quick way of visualizing the potential of one site is by using the Evaluate Site - Click on the Map option. Follow the same steps as before to look for a potential site for your favorite store!
