10. Click Sharing and check the box next to Everyone (public). This will allow you to publish your data into a publicly viewable web map and story map.
This section is for those who are already familiar with creating a basic map document using ArcMap. You will work with an existing ArcMap document and log in to the software using your Clemson username and password. This connects your computer to ArcGIS Online. Then, any data layers in the Table of Contents in your map will be published together into an ArcGIS online dataset called a service.
Publishing your feature classes as services in ArcGIS Online
When publishing from ArcMap to ArcGIS Online, all the layers present in the map will be bundled together in a single service, so we will remove any layers which you do not want in your story map. You also need to remove any basemaps from the map document.
1. Open the ArcMap document stored on the CCGT network drive called PublishingDataToAGOL.mxd. (It's stored on :\Workshops\GeologyFieldMapping\Oct_2018). This document contains an example map to you will publish today.
2. Remove any layer from the Table of Contents other than the data you want to publish. At a minimum, remove any basemaps. To do so, right-click on their name in the Table of Contents and select Remove.
3. Sign in to your ArcGIS Online account. Go to: File - Sign In. Login with your Clemson username and password. (Review the steps from the Pre-requisites page as needed).
4. Click on: File - Share As - Service... and click Next.
5. Select My Hosted Services (Clemson University)
6. Service name: Delete the existing name and type geology_by_YourInitials (use underscores, no spaces).
7. Click on Capabilities: check Feature Access and uncheck Tiled Mapping
8. Click on Feature Access: check Query, if not already selected. You can enable editing permissions later if needed.
9. Item Description:
- Summary: Enter a brief description about what is in your map and its purpose.
- Tags: geology, Clemson
10. Click Publish in the upper right-hand corner.
You should get a notice that the publishing was successful, which means that the layers are now accessible in ArcGIS Online. The next step is to make an interactive web map which will be the foundation of your story map.
