  1. Place students in groups of 4.
  2. Post an interesting or unusual picture for the entire class.
  3. Ask students to consider what the picture reminds them of.
  4. Ask the group to choose a recorder, who writes down everyone’s ideas on a sheet of paper.
  5. Pass all papers to another group. Instruct groups to read the list and add something they have not added on a previous sheet.
  6. Pass all papers to another group. Add a filter to the thinking, such as: What does this remind you of that is mathematical? Or scientific? Or is related to language arts? Or is historical? Circle any examples already listed on the paper and add new examples.
  7. Eventually, return papers to the original group.
  8. Focus on one filter and ask groups to use the list of ideas to teach the group something about the ideas on the sheet. They might write a rap song, create a poster, write a short poem such as a haiku or combine oral, physical and musical elements into a presentation.
