First Turn/Last Turn

First Turn/Last Turn

1. Give students time to read a passage of text.

2. As they read, ask students to highlight or record three statements found in the reading that had particular meaning for them.

3. Place students in groups of four.

4. Ask one student in the group to share one of their highlighted statements. This is the “first turn.” Students in the group should not comment on the statement as it is being read.

5. In round-robin fashion, ask each of the listening students in the group to give their impressions of the shared statement with no cross-talk.

6. Finally, the student who originally shared the statement gets the "last turn" to give their impressions.
