Give One, Get One

Give One, Get One

  • On sticky notes, note cards or scraps of paper ask students to record their thoughts about a topic, quote, piece of text, etc. One note for each thought.

  • Ask students to review their recorded thoughts and select the one thought, feeling or idea they feel comfortable sharing with others.

  • Have students move around the room and randomly locate a partner.

  • One partner will share their idea. The listening partner will ask clarifying questions and paraphrase the information shared.

  • The pairs will switch roles and the original listening partner now shares their idea. The other partner asks clarifying questions, and paraphrases the information shared.

  • The pairs now switch cards.

  • Stir the room and have students move around the room to find a new partner.

  • The new partners share the ideas on the card they have obtained from their previous partner in the same manner as before. After sharing, they again switch cards.

  • Continue stirring the room until time is called.

  • Ask students to move back to their seats and, with a shoulder partner and/or table team, share the ideas they heard as they moved about the room.

  • Instruct the teams to determine any common themes or similarities and share those with the whole group.
