Idea Tournament

  1. Individuals identify four key point, terms, ideas, themes, takeaways, etc. from the text or data.
  2. Whole group mingles and individuals find a partner.
  3. With their partner, participants share and discuss the points, and come to a consensus on their top two points.
  4. Participants mingle a second time and find a new partner.
  5. With their new partner, participants share and discuss their top two points.
  6. Once they have shared, the pairs must come to a consensus on their one most important idea.
  7. Pairs will then share their most important ideas with the whole group.
  8. The whole group discusses the most important ideas shared and looks for common themes.

Alternatives:

  • In step 8, the whole group might work to reach a consensus on the one most important idea.
  • In step 1, depending on the content and the time, individuals may begin by recording more than four ideas. If more than four ideas are identified in step 1, it might be beneficial to have individuals rank their ideas before sharing their top four with a partner.
