Inside the Fishbowl

Inside the Fishbowl

  1. Choose a social skill or other behavior you wish students to observe during the fishbowl activity. Discuss the goal with the class.
  2. Give all students a task, such as a problem to solve, a topic to discuss or an article to read, etc. Place students in groups and give students time to think about the topic or complete the task.
  3. Choose one group of students to be "in the fishbowl." Thank the group and acknowledge that they might be nervous when in the fishbowl.
  4. Position the class around this group.
  5. Remind the class of the goal or skill they are observing. A rubric for the skill might be provided.
  6. Ask the class to observe or take notes as the group discusses the issue, solves the problem, etc.
  7. Discuss with the class what the skill or goal looked like as the group worked in the fishbowl. What went well? What might they change to better meet the goal? Remind students to be mindful and considerate of the students in the fishbowl.
