A surrealistic, unforgettable, A to B early afternoon run in fine autumn weather…

By 1.15pm a skittish pack of harriers had assembled in warm sunshine at A, the west exit of Kamakura JR station, well-prepared for the “new” start time of 1.30pm (except for the one or two who assumed the run start would be at the usual 3pm). Fullerair was collecting run fees and the 100 Yen levy for being improperly dressed (many having turned up wearing go-faster, just do it-type, lycra outfits).

After a long wait - and a lengthy briefing by hare Oishi - the restless pack finally set off in good spirits (somewhat late) at 1.50pm. Oishi had warned that there were check backs, checks, back checks, ‘roops’ and no short cuts; true arrows were marked “on on”, all other arrows were possible false trails or other hashes’ trails, etc., - and oh yes - point B was a private residence “somewhere in Kanagawa-ken…”

The pack quickly sniffed out the first arrow, some 200m southwest of the station but then immediately became hopelessly lost in the milling crowds of tourists on Kamakura’s main promenade. This first delay (still within sight of the station) was only of some 10 minutes, but there were to be many, many, more. The trail turned east, crossed the river and arrived at the first check and a 2nd round of total confusion. After several searches for the elusive typically very small ‘on on’ arrow, several phone calls back to the hares for assistance and close inspection of Samurai Hash and other multi-coloured arrows, the pack (still together) at last found the trail, which led us over the railway and up into the hills. Here we hoped we couldn’t get lost again: there was flour every 30 – 50 metres and the front runners frequently called On On!

We didn’t (get lost), until we descended a steep flight of steps to a road (near the twin tunnels linking Kamakura and Zushi). This road was the scene of a monumental, will-go-down-in-4H-history, longest milling around like headless chickens, half-hour search for the trail. The more experienced hounds systematically examined every possible direction within 500 - 800m of the last-seen washed-out arrow. After numerous attempts to phone the hares, we made contact and were advised that the right direction was along the road that wound seaward down towards Zushi Marina (familiar territory for some 4H veterans - and where eventually an arrow was spotted, some 1.5km from the last-seen arrow). On this winding downhill trail the pack separated – but not for long. Soon we were all together, once again utterly lost and in total confusion. There was mutinous talk of abandoning ship, and during discussions on giving up the run, our ‘Occupy Zushi Marina’ movement’s self-appointed spokeshasher came up with a great idea: “head straight for the beer” - except nobody knew where B was. After 15 -20 minutes, contact with a hare was established who was finally persuaded to disclose the address of B and the location of the OnOnOn. B was evidently still some 5 or 6 km away, somewhere in Hayama. Because nobody was familiar with the address of B, we agreed we had best keep basically together and the pack moved off in the approximate direction of the beer (we had by this time been “running” for way, way over an hour).

Inevitably, when we were not looking for arrows we pretty quickly stumbled on one, about a km from the Marina - and soon we were on the true trail, heading up a hill, through that ultra-posh housing development (“plots go at 2 million Yen per tsubo” opined BT Commodore) and then into the woods again. It was of note that here I “overtook” Santa Maria, one of those who had turned up for a 3pm start! When I asked how he had got in front of those of us who had set off at 1.50pm, he merely commented that “the first shall be last and the last shall be first”.

Finally, Zushi beach came into view, the trail leading us along the busy beach road with its polluted air and beautiful sunset vista over Sagami Bay. The front-runners had long disappeared in the direction of the beer. A few more phone calls to the hares confirmed for the peloton of middle runners that the trail went through the tunnel to Hayama and that the finish was only 1.5km away.

The final check in the middle of the tunnel didn’t cause any further delays, being quickly solved and patently phony, but the next 3-way road junction once more gave rise to indecision, complaints and grumbling. Turning left over the crossing, then a longish pull uphill to the finish where Oishi’s applause guided us up some steps to the beer.

BUT it was happo-shu!!*^!$^*!! The snacks were great, though: delicious prawn ‘crumble’ and fresh fruits set up in a pleasing garden setting and Santa Maria’s kind contribution of 2 bottles of wine was most welcome. The run had taken over 2 hours for most of us, but we were in time to see the sun drop behind the wooded hills. As dusk fell, Ass. Direttori Generali (Dragonfly) called the circle, despite some runners still being out on the trail and other hashers having by then already left, ‘to look for some real beer’. A subdued atmosphere pervaded the circle: comments about the paucity of arrows (the consensus was that the average distance between arrows was over 1km) followed the usual self-introductions. There were also a few grumbles about the advance booking system for the OnOnOn and run information generally being a bit unhashical. It is Mismanagement and no rules, after all - so what do we (should we) expect? But there are time-honoured Hash customs and traditions.

All in all, a good and varied trail, featuring roads, hills, autumn leaves, beaches and nice views of Mt Fuji and Sagami Bay, but very very inadequately marked. Notably, however, for most of the run the pack stayed together – which has never to my knowledge happened before on any previous 4H run! The seasonal fare served in elegant surroundings at the OnOnOn was plentiful and tasty, but the drinks were insufficient and the ambience a bit quiet. Partly, perhaps, because 2 runners - Nana “Always Open” & Chika, were still out on the trail and didn’t come in till well after dark, too late for the circle and the start of the dinner. Most of the the drinks had gone by then, too.

Some thoughts:

The earlier start in winter is not a bad idea. Holding the circle in daylight is a Good Thing.

Not only Facebook for run information, news and reservations… Information should be as widely publicised as possible and we should make everyone (particularly visitors and new boots) welcome on our runs and at OnOnOns, without compulsory advance reservations. I know hares put a lot of effort into the choice of OnOnOn venues, but a few contingency places should be allowed for. I understand that the problem on this run was only the lack of seats, not the quantity of food (there were lots of left-overs)…

Guidelines for hares should be made available in Japanese and English…

シュールで忘れられない、秋空の午後一のAtoBラン・・

用意周到な新しいスタート時間である13時30分にあわせて、暖かい日差しの中、13時15

分に陽気なハッシャーの一団がスタート地点であるJR鎌倉駅西口に集まった。

（スタートがいつもの15時だと思っていた一人、二人を除いて・・。）

Fullerairは参加料と100円の、不適切な服装(※)に対する課税を徴収していた。

（多くの人は早く走るためだけにライクラ(合成繊維)の服で参加していた。）

※注意 ：今回からリピータはHAYAMA HASHのT-Shirtsを着て参加しないと100円余分に徴

収されることになりました。

ヘアーの大石さんの説明の後、じっとしていられない一団はついに予定よりいくらか遅れ

て13時50分に元気に出発した。

大石さんは「チェックバックとチェックとループがあってショートカットはありません。

正しいアロー（矢印）は"on on"と書いてあって、他のアローは間違ったものか、他のハ

ッシュのアローです。ゴールは神奈川県のどこかの個人宅です。」とアナウンスした。

一団はすばやく駅の南西200mのところに最初のアローを見つけた。しかし、すぐに鎌倉の

メイン通りの観光客の人混みの中でどうしようもなく迷ってしまった。

この最初の遅れ（いまだ駅の風景から出ていない）は実質10分ちょっとだけだったけと、

きっと、もっともっとあったに違いない。

コースは右に曲がって、川を越えて最初のチェックポイントに着いた。ここが全体のうち

2回目の混乱だった。

見つけにくい、例によってとても小さな"on on"アローを何度か探した後、何人かは援助を

求め、サムライハッシュと他の複数の色のアローとを識別するために、ヘアーに電話した。

一団（ここではまだ一緒にいた）はついにコースを見つけた。コースは鉄道の向こうに続

いていて、そのまま丘を登っていった。ここで私たちは再び迷わないことを望んだ。30～

50mごとに粉がまかれていて、先頭ランナーは頻繁にオンオン（On On）！と叫んでいた。

私たちは急な階段を降りて（鎌倉と逗子をつなぐトンネルの近くの）道路に出るまでは迷わ

なかった。

この道路での出来事は4Hの歴史の中で記念的な光景だった。みんなはコースを探して30分間、

頭のないチキンのようにうろうろしていた。より経験のあるヘアーが機械的に最後に見たア

ローの全ての方向に対して500～800mの範囲で探した。

何度も何度もヘアーに電話をかけて、やっと連絡がつき、正しい方向は海のほうへ曲がって

いる道路に沿って逗子マリーナに向かえばよいことが分かった。

（逗子マリーは4Hの何人かのベテランには馴染み深い場所であり、結局のところ最後に見た

アローから約1.5kmのところにアローがあった。）

この曲がった下り坂で一団は分かれていったけれど、それはそんなに長くはなかった。

すぐに私たちは一緒になって、完全に迷ってしまった。

反抗的な会話や、ランをあきらめるかどうかという議論の中で、逗子マリーナを占拠するム

ーブメントの自称スポークスマンはすばらしいアイデアを見つけた。

"ビールの用意されているゴールに向かってまっすぐ進もう"・・でも誰もゴールがとこか知

らなかった。

15～20分後ヘアーと連絡がつき、ヘアーはついにゴールとON-ONの場所を公表することを促さ

れた。明らかにゴールは5～6km先の葉山のどこかである。

誰もゴール近辺の住所に詳しくなかったので、私たちは基本的に一緒にいるようにして、ビ

ール（ゴール）のおおよその方向に出発することにした。

（私たちはこの時までに1時間以上走っていた。）

特にアローを探していないときに、必然的にマリーナから約1kmのところでアローに巡り合っ

た。 そしてすぐに正しいコースに戻った。

丘を登って高級住宅地（BT Commodoreが言うには坪当たり200万円の地域）を通って再び森に

入った。私はここで、15時にスタートしたSanta-Mariaに追い越された！

13時50分にスタートした私たちにどうやって追い着いたのか彼に尋ねたところ、単にこう言

った。「1番は最後であり、最後は1番である。」

最後に逗子ビーチが見えてきた。コースは私たちを汚染された空気と相模湾の美しい夕暮れ

の景色の見える往来の激しい海岸線に導いた。先頭ランナーは遠くビールの方角に消えた。

ヘアーに2,3回電話をして、葉山へのトンネルを抜けてゴールまでは1.5kmほどだと分かった。

トンネルの中の最後のチェックポイントではこれ以上の遅れはでなかった。

あきらかに偽者だった。しかし次の3方向の交差点では再び不平不満を引き起こした。

左に曲がってやや長い上り坂を登って、大石さんの拍手が私たちをビールへの階段へと導い

た。

しかし、それは発泡酒だった!!*^!$^*!!スナックは素晴らしかった。美味しいエビと新鮮な果

物がご機嫌な庭にセッティングされ、おまえけにSanta-Mariaの持ってきた2本のワインがあっ

た。ランには私たちのほとんどが2時間以上かかったけど、森の向こうに太陽が沈むのを見るの

には間に合った。夕日が沈む時、何人かのランナーはコースを外れたままで、また他のハッシ

ャーは本物のビールを探しに行ったままだったけれど、Dragonflyがサークルを作ろうと呼びか

けた。

静かな雰囲気がサークルに流れていた。アローの不足についてのコメントがいつもの自己紹介

のあとに続いた。（大多数の意見では平均的なアローの間隔が1km以上だった。）

ON-ONの事前予約の方法とランのインフォメーションが少しいつものハッシュ的ではなかったと

不満もあった。

結局、管理不行き届きであり、ルールが存在しなかった。私たちは予測すべきでしょうか？

しかし、昔からのハッシュの習慣と伝統は存在する。

結局のところ、道路と丘と紅葉とビーチと富士山と相模湾の美しい景色を含んだ変化に富んだ

よいコースだった。

しかし、とてもとても不十分なアロー（矢印）だった。しかしながら、特に一緒にいた一団に

とって、私の知る限りかつて4Hの中でこのようなことは起こらなかった！豪華な部屋で出され

た季節の料理は十分な量があり、美味しかった。

でも、飲み物は足りなくて雰囲気は少し静かだった。一部分はたぶん、2人のランナーのNana

（Always Open）と Chikaがいまだにコースを外れて、暗くなっても戻ってきていなかったこ

とと、サークルを作るのとディナーが遅かったために、それまでにだいぶ飲んでしまっていた

のが理由だろう。

考察：

冬に早めにスタートするのは悪くない。明るいうちにサークルを作るのはよいことだ。

Facebook上だけでなく、お知らせはできる限り広く公表されるべきであり、また全ての人

（とりわけ初心者）を義務的な事前予約なしにランとOn-Onに招待できるべきだ。

私はヘアーがOn-Onの場所を選ぶのに多大な努力をはらっているのを知っているけれども、

2,3人の不測の増減は受け入れられるべきだ。

私はこのランの問題は料理の質ではなく、座席の不足にあったことを理解している。

（たくさん食べ残しがあったけれど・・）

ヘアーのためのガイドラインを英語と日本語で作るべきだ。
