Policy for Concussion Assessment/Testing:

• For Patients from Covered Organizations:
  If a patient calls to schedule an appointment for a concussion test or assessment, transfer the call to the Outreach Department at 970-296-4811.

• Walk-In Concussion Appointments:
  Concussions are not seen on a walk-in basis. They must be scheduled in advance with Rachel Freeman.
  If a patient walks in for a concussion assessment or treatment:

  1. Check if Rachel Freeman is available in the clinic.

  2. If she is not available, provide the parent with the Outreach contact information and direct them to Rachel Freeman for next steps.

Helpful Information for Staff:

• Concussion Line: The concussion line is no longer in operation. All concussion and outreach-related calls should be directed to the Outreach Department.

• Response Time: Patients should allow 24 hours for a return call or email from the Outreach Department.

• Concussion Services:

  • Rachel Freeman is the only provider offering concussion testing/management for Outreach athletes, coaches, and communities.

  • Occasionally, a Team Athlete may see a VSON provider for return-to-sport clearance post-concussion. This must be coordinated through the Outreach Department.

• Concussion Testing Fees: Concussion testing/assessment is free for athletes and coaches under the Athletic Outreach Coverage policy. No patient under this policy should be billed for concussion testing/assessment by Rachel Freeman.

• Physical Therapy for Concussion Patients:

  • Melissa Volkert (Vail-Summit Physical Therapy in Frisco) can assess and treat concussion and traumatic brain injury patients.

  • Appointments must be scheduled in advance, and the Athletic Outreach Coverage policy does not apply to physical therapy appointments.

  • If an Outreach Athlete/Coach chooses to see Melissa, they will be responsible for payment and will be billed accordingly.

Policy for Non-Athletic Outreach Coverage Patients:

• Concussion Services:
  VSON providers do not test, assess, or treat concussion patients unless they are members of organizations under the Athletic Outreach Coverage policy.

• For Non-Covered Patients:
  If a patient calls for concussion assessment, management, or treatment and is not covered by the Athletic Outreach Coverage policy, refer them to Melissa Volkert, OTC at Vail-Summit Physical Therapy.
