Farmers are capable of planting and harvesting four crops: Carrots, Potatoes, Beets, and Wheat. These crops can then be used as a basic food source for your villagers, used to feed your animals, and used by the Chef to make better food like baked potatoes and bread. Additionally the Farmer will also gather sugar cane to be used by other villagers.

Behavior

Till Farmland

The farmer will look for a dirt or grass block that is within a Farming area. If the farmer has a Hoe, they will till the land to create more farmland. The time it takes to till is dependent on the Farmer's skill level.

When a Farmer's hoe breaks, he will look for a new one in Storage. If one doesn't exist, they will attempt to craft their own wooden hoe on a crafting bench in Storage

Planting Crops

The Farmer will keep a small collection of wheat seeds, potatoes, carrots, and beet seeds for replanting the Farming Areas. Once a tilled farmland tile is found, they will attempt to plant new crops there. The Farmer will evaluate the crops in the four blocks adjacent to the tilled farmland and plant the crop that appears the most.

Farmers will not plant crops on farmland that has no adjacent crops. It is for this reason that the player must initially seed a new Farming Area with at least one crop type to designate what should grow there.

The time it takes for a Farmer to plant a crop is dependent on the Farmer's skill level.

Harvest Crops

Farmers will search for wheat, potatoes, carrots, or beets that are fully grown in a Farming Area and harvest them. The time it takes to collect the crops highly depends on the Farmer's skill level. Lower skill Farmers will frequently disrupt the land during harvesting, turning it back to untilled dirt.

Gather Sugar Cane

The Farmer will also harvest nearby sugarcane. If it is at least two stalks tall, they will break it down to a single stalk and return the extra to storage.

Farmers and Water

Like other Villagers, Farmers cannot path over or through water. To minimize pathing errors you should cover all water sources with blocks that the farmers cannot jump onto.
