Humanities Department
Humanities Week 2025
Humanities Week is a key annual event for our department, providing enriching experiences that facilitate students' understanding of the real-world relevance of their Humanities curriculum. Each year, this event offers a platform for deeper understanding, moving beyond textbooks to bring concepts to life through authentic, immersive learning.
This year's theme, "One Nation, Many Flavours," exemplifies this approach. Through an exhibition by the National Heritage Board, students explored Singapore's cultural tapestry and its nation-building journey, notably incorporating exhibitions and class discussions on Singapore's vibrant hawker culture. Through Humanities Week, students not only acquire Humanities knowledge, but also foster important 21st Century Competencies such as critical thinking, civic literacy, and cross-cultural literacy. With these efforts, students learn to be informed and engaged citizens ready to contribute meaningfully to our diverse society.
Gold Award Triumph at the HSI Competition
This year, our Sec 2 History students delivered an outstanding performance in the Historical Scene Investigation (HSI) competition, earning the prestigious Gold Award and placing in the Top 10 among 133 participating schools nationwide! Their award-winning project was a deep dive into the local history of Tampines, focusing on the historical concept of change and continuity. The students also investigated how the neighbourhood transformed since the days of sand quarries in the 1960s. This investigation demanded great commitment from the students, requiring in-depth historical research with good analytical skills to unearth the complex story embedded within their local community's urban landscape.
Apart from writing a report, the students had also embraced digital media, using video making to creatively communicate their historical findings. This hands-on, creative process allowed students to truly enjoy and own their learning journey, complementing the detailed investigative report they produced. This HSI project was a powerful lesson in civic literacy for our students, as our students actively contribute to the living narrative of Tampines, enriching their community’s documented heritage.
