Our People, Our Tapestry
Springfield Secondary School commemorated Racial Harmony Day 2025 with the theme “Our People, Our Tapestry,” a reminder of Singapore’s journey towards harmony since the 1964 racial riots and the shared responsibility we hold in building understanding and respect among all communities.
This year’s celebration placed a special spotlight on the richness of Indian culture in Singapore. Students enjoyed Festive Rhapsody, a lively assembly performance by a group of Indian classical musicians. The presentation introduced key festivals such as Ponggal, Deepavali, Holi and the Indian New Year, and featured an engaging blend of traditional Indian music with familiar English melodies. The programme highlighted how different cultures weave together to form Singapore’s multicultural identity.
In class, students explored the meaning of cultural appreciation, learning to understand traditions sincerely, listen to authentic voices and honour cultural practices with respect. They were also guided through the significance and proper wearing of ethnic outfits from the Chinese, Malay, Indian and Eurasian communities. These discussions helped students differentiate between genuine appreciation and inappropriate adaptations of cultural attire.
Racial Harmony Day 2025 was a meaningful blend of learning, music and celebration. Through shared experiences and deeper conversations about heritage, Springfielders strengthened their understanding of Singapore’s multicultural tapestry and reaffirmed our collective commitment to harmony in diversity.
