STEM-Applied Learning Programme:
Cultivating Innovators at Springfield Secondary
Secondary 1
This year, our Secondary 1 students explored the Applied Learning Programme (ALP) in Health and Food Science through four hands-on modules. They began with a blind taste test of alternative proteins—chicken, soy, mycoprotein, and even insects—to understand sustainable food choices. In the Hidden Sugars module, students analysed food labels and made zero-sugar ice-cream using simple scientific methods. Next, they experimented with molecular gastronomy by creating healthier popping boba through sodium alginate encapsulation. The programme concluded with students designing their own nutritious granola bars. Learning journeys to local farms further deepened their understanding of Singapore’s food systems and sustainability.
Secondary 2
Our Secondary 2 Applied Learning Programme focuses on building students’ understanding of food sustainability through hands-on urban farming experiences. The Applied Learning Programme (ALP) programme begins with the Singapore Food Story, helping students appreciate the importance of food resilience especially after COVID-19. Students then conduct investigations using Micro:bit sensors and data loggers to determine optimal plant growth conditions. They design creative mini greenhouses and compare microgreen growth in controlled and open environments. Through soil planting, hydroponics, and composting, students explore sustainable farming methods. Learning journeys to commercial farms further deepen their understanding. This enriching programme builds curiosity, critical thinking, and practical STEM skills.
