Sec 3 Global Education Programme (GEP)
The 2025 GEP Learning Journeys to Sabah and Penang offered our students rich, authentic experiences that stretched their curiosity, strengthened their character, and developed their 21st Century Competencies beyond the classroom.
Throughout both trips, students demonstrated independence and responsibility in managing early flights, long travel days, and full itineraries. Whether making the morning ascent to Kundasang in Sabah or navigating Penang’s busy heritage zones, students adapted to changing environments with resilience. They took ownership of their belongings, personal well-being, and punctuality, learning to stay organised and calm amidst varying weather, terrain, and schedules.
Both groups experienced meaningful cultural exchanges through their school immersion programmes—Sabah’s visit to SMJK Limbanak and Penang’s visit to SMK Convent Butterworth. Engaging with Malaysian peers gave students first-hand exposure to different school cultures, communication styles, and community values.
Cultural visits such as the Mari Mari Cultural Village in Sabah and the Peranakan Mansion, Clan Jetties, Little India, and heritage streets in Penang helped students appreciate the region’s diverse ethnic histories. Through guided tours, student interaction, and respectful observation, they developed cultural sensitivity and a deeper understanding of Southeast Asia’s multicultural landscapes.
Students in both groups engaged in experiential learning that invited inquiry, observation, and analysis. Sabah’s visit to the Desa Cattle Dairy Farm exposed students to agro-tourism innovations, dairy production processes, and environmental sustainability, prompting questions about resource management and food systems. In Penang, the Tropical Fruit Farm introduced students to enzyme fermentation, organic fertilisers, and biodiversity conservation. Heritage explorations—such as Penang’s mural walk—further encouraged students to interpret how culture, identity, and urban development intersect. Across both trips, students learned to connect classroom knowledge to authentic, real-world contexts.
Whether travelling through Sabah’s mountainous roads or navigating Penang’s bustling streets, students worked closely in groups, supported one another, and communicated effectively with teachers, guides, and peers. Daily debrief sessions on both trips strengthened their ability to articulate reflections, listen actively, and collaborate respectfully. These shared challenges and experiences forged stronger relationships and nurtured teamwork.
Interacting with local communities—be it residents of Penang’s historic waterfront homes or cultural practitioners in Sabah—helped students understand different lifestyles and appreciate the lived experiences of others. Students practised empathy, respect, and open-mindedness as they observed traditions, listened to stories, and reflected on how culture, environment, and community shape identities.
The Learning Journeys to Sabah and Penang were transformative opportunities that brought the 21st Century Competencies to life in vivid, meaningful ways. Through cultural immersion, environmental exploration, and collaborative challenges, our GEP students returned with broadened perspectives, strengthened character, and a deeper curiosity about the world around them.
