ABSTRACT
This study explores organic insect repellent sprays and salves as safe alternatives to synthetic products, using plant-based ingredients, primarily essential oils like citronella, lavender, vanilla, and peppermint to deter insects. While some plant-based repellents may offer limited protection, their effectiveness varies significantly based on formulation and insect species. Organic options are often preferred to reduce exposure to synthetic chemicals and their environmental impact. However, their efficacy may be lower and duration of protection shorter compared to synthetic repellents. Thus, the goal of this study is to develop a product that is both safe and healthy, minimizing potential hazards to biological systems. In recent years, the focus on consumer benefits has led to the creation of these organic insect repellents and salves, which are non toxic to humans and pets, safe for the environment, and based on natural ingredients without harmful chemicals. Additionally, this research raises awareness about the ecological impact of insects, particularly concerning diseases like dengue, malaria, and Zika virus, as well as allergies and skin irritations caused by fleas, ticks, and other pests. Finally, these homemade sprays and salves will be advantageous for gardening enthusiasts (as the herbs can be grown at home) while promoting safety and environmental consciousness. By understanding this study, readers can enhance their knowledge of good sanitation practices and proper cultural care. This will serve as a reference to future researchers for the development and production of repellents, salves, and similar products. Furthermore, we tried to make a keen observation on the effects of insect repellents and the known advantageous usage of such. We look forward to a better understanding of this review and useful information on the proper and conscientious usage of insect repellents and salve.
