This lesson presents the different stages of language development and the importance of verbal interaction by caregivers. Participants will learn to recognize communication skills from birth.
Parents understand how their interactions with a child stimulate language development
In this video we will look at some practices to support the development of communication skills from birth.
Language development begins before birth. Towards the end of pregnancy, a baby begins to hear sounds coming from outside the mother's body.
From a very young age babies are very in tune with the human voice and prefer it to other sounds. In particular, they prefer the higher pitch characteristic of female voices.
It is very important to note that not all children develop speech and language skills in the same way, however, all children follow these stages to master language skills.
Not all children develop speech and language skills in the same way. However, all children follow a natural progression or a series of stages to master language skills. The adults around children are key to building their vocabulary.
The stages of language development help doctors and other health care professionals determine if the child is developing normally or needs help. Sometimes, children delay reaching these stages because they have hearing loss, and in other cases because of a speech or language disorder.
As you listen to the song Magnolia Tree, answer the following questions:
What is 1 thing you learned about early intervention?
What is 1 question you still have about early intervention?
Share your reflection with the other participants in your local program.
At the end of every unit of instruction, you will take a few minutes to answer a couple of questions that will check your understanding on the lessons you have completed.
You have completed three lessons in Unit 2:
Lesson 2.1: Introduction to Child Development
Lesson 2.2: Developmental Milestones, Part 1
Lesson 2.2: Developmental Milestones, Part 2
