This is a video explaining executive function. It is part of a series of videos that explains how these lifelong skills develop, what can disrupt their development, and how supporting them pays off in school and life.
As you watch the video, reflection on the following:
How do you or your child respond to changes in activities and or daily routines?
Executive function and self-regulation skills depend on three types of brain function: working memory, cognitive/mental flexibility, and self/inhibitory-control.
Working memory is the ability to hold information in your mind and use it.
Mental or Cognitive (brain) flexibility is the capacity to switch gears and adjust to changing demands, instructions and priorities.
Self or Inhibitory control is the ability to master thoughts and impulses so as to resist temptations, distractions, and habits, and to pause and think before acting.
Children are not born with these skills—they are born with the potential to develop them. Some children may need more support than others to develop these skills.
Review the activities in the document below that support building these skills.
Choose two activities you would like to try with your child.
