Food Tasting: January 2020 Citrus

Time to try....Citrus!

This month, your nutrition educator will be bringing citrus fruits for you to try! Foods in the Citrus family include: oranges, mandarins, lemons, limes, and grapefruit, to mention a few.

Citrus foods contain vitamin C, which helps to strengthen your immune system by boosting antibody production to fight off those unbearable winter colds. Does vitamin C prevent you from getting a cold? Evidence shows that it is unlikely that vitamin C can prevent a cold, but it may help to reduce the severity and duration of it. Keep your immune system strong by eating citrus foods!

Did you know that vitamin C is important for gum health, too? Vitamin C is vital for maintaining strong collagen, the connective tissue in your gums. Impress your dentist this year with a healthy smile!

Vitamin C cannot be made by your body, so you must consume it in your food. Luckily, vitamin C containing foods are delicious and easy to add to your diet! Citrus foods are delicious on their own for breakfast, snack, or dessert. Have you ever thought to add citrus to enhance other dishes? Add a clementine to sweeten up your salad, or orange juice as a component for a marinade for chicken or salmon.

This month, we will be showing you how to grill citrus fruits for a warm, tasty treat. Check out the video below for instructions!
