Food Tasting: October 2019 Apples

Time to try....Apples!

An apple a day keeps the doctor away! This month students will be trying dried apple rings. Dried apples are made from the common apple, Malus pumila, and are an excellent source of fiber. Half a cup, which is the equivalent of a one cup serving of fruit, provides 130 calories and 3 grams of fiber, 11% of the daily value! This sweet and nutritious snack is a fun way to enjoy apples.

There are various ways to eat dried apples! They can be eaten as a snack, added to oatmeal or cereal, or baked into muffins. If you have fresh apples, you can even make your own! Simply cut an apple into thin rings or slices, about 1/8 of an inch thick. Place them in an oven on the lowest setting for about five to eight hours. Add cinnamon to spice up the flavor for a perfect fall snack.

If you don’t want to wait for your apple rings to dry, add fresh apple rings to pancake batter and turn it into a delicious and nutritious breakfast! Check out our video below to learn just how to make Apple Ring Pancakes!
