Food Tasting: April 2020 Herbs
Time to try....Fresh Herbs!
Time to try....Fresh Herbs!
Fresh herbs are a fun way to add color and flavor to easy, homemade meals. This month, Eat Right Philly is encouraging all students to try fresh herbs! There are so many different options to incorporate fresh herbs into either savory or sweet recipes. Common fresh herbs include scallions, parsley, cilantro, basil, thyme, rosemary, dill, oregano, and mint. As the weather starts to warm, this is the perfect time to experiment in the garden. The great thing about herbs, however, is that they are versatile and extremely easy to grow – indoors and outdoors. A small pot on the window sill is all you need.

Each fresh herb has their own distinct flavor and health benefits. Similar to leafy greens, fresh herbs are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. They’re also a dietary source of polyphenols, which have both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Polyphenols are helpful in lowering chronic inflammation, decreasing the risk for chronic disease. Click on our short video to see how you can add fresh scallions to a delicious tofu scramble!
