Thesis-Based Research Paper

Competency #2: Critical Thinking & Creativity

What's a Thesis-Based Research Paper?

A thesis-based research paper presents a research-supported argument which explores a "text to text "or "text to world" connection to the identified literary work(s).  As with all summative assessments, you are required to demonstrate the authenticity and originality of your work through the creation of a "breadcrumb trail" throughout the course of your class's study of the identified literary work.

Creating Your Thesis-Based Research Paper

NOTE:  Use of AI is limited to the tools and steps identified in Step #2 below. In this step, you will collaborate with AI and disclose your full chat via the Google Classroom assignment indicated and linked below.

Craft and Draft...

The resources on this page will guide you through the process of writing your paper. Keep in mind that writing is hardly ever a linear process. There are steps indicated below, if you wish to follow them, but keep in mind that most writers skip around from step to step – repeating some and completing several cycles of brainstorming, discovery drafting, outlining,  and drafting before they have a draft ready for submission.

If you need help at any point in the process, sign-up for a conference.

Overview

Step #1: Review Your Reader's Response & Related Research

In this step, you will review your:

    • reader's response/viewer's response to the identified literary work(s)

    • assigned research

Step #2: Create a Thesis & Supports

In this step, you will use the AI chatbot I created to help you identify your own thesis and supports. This chatbot will have you referencing your reader's responses, research, and hardcopy of the literary work(s). To get started, click on your class period below:

A Raisin in the Sun

"A" per.

42: The Jackie Robinson Story

 "D" per.

The Grapes of Wrath

 "C"per.     "G" per.

Step #3:  Develop the Argument

In this step, you will use not use AI. You will use your reader's responses, research, hardcopy of the identified literary work(s), and hard copy of your thesis and supports (Step #2) to:

  • handwrite your "outline" doc (see Mrs. Juster for this)

  • handwrite your weaving-in passages doc (see Mrs. Juster for this)

This analog step is completed in-person and in-class. Once you have completed it, show Mrs. Juster.

 Step #4:  Full Rough Draft

In this step, you will use not use AI. You will use the specific handwritten and digital resources identified in the Google Classroom posting for this summative assessment. Note: All digital draft work - rough to final to revisions - must be completed on this doc to ensure proper time-date stamps .

Step 6- Rough Draft Guide.pdf

Don't Forget Works Cited

Creating Citations and a Works Cited Entry

Does AI have to be cited - yes! You will need to cite your work with the bot.

Step #5: Edit Full Rough

In this step, you will not use AI. Although you will have the opportunity to create a trend through revision, take the time to edit and revise your rough draft as fully as possible now. It will pay-off in the long run and save you time.  Once you submit this draft, it becomes your final draft.

Step #6: Be Prepared to Demonstrate Your Breadcrumb Trail

  • A thesis-based research paper presents a research-supported argument which explores a "text to text "or "text to world" connection to the identified literary work(s).  As with all summative assessments, you are required to demonstrate the authenticity and originality of your work through the creation of a "breadcrumb trail" throughout the course of your class's study of the identified literary work.

All done? Not yet. Be Prepared to Demonstrate Your Breadcrumb Trail

Once you have submitted your paper to the indicated assignment in Google Classroom, be prepared to demonstrate the authenticity and originality of your work by sharing every step of your "breadcrumb trail"  in a 1:1 conference with Mrs. Juster. If you are not able to share a full and complete "breadcrumb trail"  your summative is invalid and you will have to start this whole process - from research to final draft - all over again.
