NHCTE Spring Conference, 2025
You know the feeling. Your heart rate increases. Your blood pressure rises. Given the word choice alone, you’re 99% sure that the essay you just read wasn’t written by the student who submitted it - or any human for that matter. It’s frustrating. Discouraging. Now, here’s the good news. It doesn’t have to be.
As English teachers, we are not doomed to live in a world where AI threatens to destroy our confidence in the authenticity and originality of student work. All we need to do is embrace what has worked in the past and become active participants in creating a new present. In this workshop, we’ll discover how to create a learning environment that intentionally shifts gears- back and forth- between common 20th century tools for learning and 21st century tools.
In this workshop, we’ll explore how to use both 20th and 21st century tools to:
disrupt the unethical use of AI
encourage authentic, original, creative and critical thinking
create and share bots we can use in our own classrooms
