A reflection paper reveals the writer's thinking about his/her own thinking. The precise term for this type of thinking is metacognition. Merriam-Webster defines metacognition as an "awareness or analysis of one's own learning or thinking processes".

reader's response/viewer's response to the designated a literary work(s) from the curriculum
assigned research completed as part of your study of the literary work (s)
Your goal is to share your thought process. How do you do that? Begin by reviewing your reader's response or viewer's response. Examine connections you made to the work and thinking questions you developed. Focus in on only one or maybe two main ideas and then follow your thoughts wherever they lead. Allow yourself to be surprised by where your thoughts lead; allow for the possibility of a realization - a new idea.
Like showing the work in math, sharing your thought process in a reflection paper is like thinking out loud- sharing with your reader the step by step thought process that led you to your conclusions. This is why you must use the "I" voice. After all, you are revealing your personal thought process as you share how you arrived at your conclusions. You'll know you’re on the right track when you start using phrases like: “This caused me to wonder why …." or “This surprised me because I would have expected…".
This type of paper is usually 500- 700 words in length.
