Formative Work
GOALS
Collaborate with members of your book group as you share the experience of reading a text.
Develop your critical thinking and academic discourse skills.
Create some of the evidence needed to demonstrate competency.
With your book group, determine a pace and schedule. Be sure to consult our academic calendars (posted in Google Classroom) and the deadline posted in our Weekly Workflow.
Can you change this schedule? Yes. As long as your group finishes the reading by the deadline, then you can adjust this schedule to fit your needs.
Use the weekly workflow to follow the pacing schedule for reading, discussing, and responding.
Complete the reading - sticky-noting to hold your thinking and record your dialog with the text. As you read, ask yourself questions like these:
In the Book: What is this about? Who is telling the story? What does the author want me to know?
In My Head: What surprised me? What challenged or confirmed my thinking? What does the author think I already know?
In My Heart: What have I learned about myself or others? How does this change my thinking about the world? How will my actions or feelings change?
Review your sticky-notes and create the first half of your response to the reading. Format it like this:
Entry #
Title of Literary Work
Author of Literary Work

Page Numbers/Chapter Number
Pre-Discussion Reflection: (choose one of the prompts below)
As I read, I wondered why...
As I read, I was surprised to learn that...
As I read, I recognized something of myself (or another person) in...
We'll use these roles to help frame each book group's ongoing discussions about their text. Roles rotate with each discussion.

Return to your reader's response. Directly below your pre-discussion reflection, write a new sub-heading: Post-Discussion Reflection
This reflection must include the following:
Significant passage identified in the discussion or your reading.
Analysis of why you selected the passage.
Commentary on elements of the book group discussion which confirmed or challenged your thinking about the reading.
