Monday 8th May saw 51 members tour the Southern Highlands by bus. Leaving Campbelltown in pouring rain had everyone thinking the day was going to ge awash, however, not so! Morning tea in Mittagong was as dry as it could be, and the friendly ducks welcomed us as they wandered around hoping to get a morsel of biscuit here and there.
Leaving Mittagong and on to Sutton Forrest and Red Cow Farm Gardens. What a surprise to find such a large area behind the front house entrance. The Autumn colours were still in full bloom and the assortment of plants, hedges and even bamboo stalks was amazing. A pond in the centre reflected the large whispering willow tree and other trees showing reds, yellows and orange colours on their leaves. The pathways were full of fallen leaves. Evergreens abounded and all types of Ivy. A horticulturist's dream of a place to visit. Not forgetting to mention the numerous 'statues' that were scattered throughout the gardens. Here again, NO RAIN!! How lucky we all felt to be able to walk through the gardens and not get wet. In fact, it wasn't even as cold as one would have thought for a day out in the Highlands.
Then onto the Moss Vale RSL where the selected meals were served, piping hot and delicious. No fault could be found with any of the meals served. Those who chose to partake of a dessert following the main course were also not disappointed.
Leaving the club we enjoyed a tour of the Highlands, making our way to the Robinson Pie Shop, where a number couldn't resist pies to take home, including the 'cherry' and 'apple' pies that are always something special to look forward to. Then, heading back to Campbelltown we again encountered some downpours. But, we all remained high and dry throughout the entire day.
Winners of the $25 gift cards were: Kathie Taylor, Glenys Dudley, Irena Bailey, Jane Power and Judy Bailey. Our faithful driver, John, was also given a $25 gift card on behalf of those present. All in all, a wonderful day.
