Whale Watching Cruise

26 July 2022

Minto Probus members were finally able to enjoy a day out of the Heads of Sydney Harbour to look for whales. Due to Covid, the outing had been cancelled twice before (in '21), so it was an anxious group eager to catch the sight of a whale that ventured out into the open sea.

Lunch was served first as the boat toured the harbour, then we ventured out through the Heads. Fortunately the day was perfect, rain clouds were gone and the sun was out. Rugged up against the winter winds, many went outside the cabin to sit in the open, scanning the water for the sight of the tell-tale sign of a water spout as a whale would come up for air.

It was a long wait, but we were rewarded by the sight of a Humpback (smaller species of the whales) finally coming up for air. The whale seemed to stay in the area for a while as it went from one side of the boat to another. There may have been several of them as it was hard to distinguish one from another.

Word came that a couple more were closer to the shore around another sight seeing boat. We were again rewarded to see these two frolicking in the area. Due to the rocking of the boat, several of the group were content to sit inside the cabin but were on the opposite side of where the whales were. Without warning a baby Humpback suddenly appeared beside the boat, on this opposite side, came up half way out of the water and proceeded to dive down right under the boat. Wow!!!! Unfortunately they were so fast and sudden that cameras were unable to catch them at the same time. However the sight of these magnificent mammals are well imprinted in the minds of everyone that they are unlikely to forget their day out at sea with them.
