In the gymnastics room the children should also go over the rules every day, they should be sitting along the edge of the floor and take their shoes off before you begin. The main rules include:
staying away from the piles of mats and the pit with supplies
no shoes on the gymnastics floor (the blue bouncy floor)
be safe with our bodies
one person on the trampoline at a time
listening to the gymnastics teacher/coach
By telling this to them every day you will set the boundaries and can make sure they remember the expectations, if additional rules are needed, please add them. At this age learning the rules and routines are really important so it is imperative to stay on the schedule as best as possible and talk about the rules frequently so they remember and can learn how to maintain a daily routine.
On the first day you may want to do a room tour and or exploration so they can become familiar with the space in a safe and controlled way. By doing this they will have seen it all and will be less likely to run off during instruction time.
After this you will utilize the lesson plans for the day/week, you should follow this, if one activity is taking longer that is ok, they are 3-5 so they may not finish every task on the lesson plan.
you should start with a fun and engaging warm up game, there may be one included on the lesson plan but there may not always be so have some extra prepared. After this you will typically move on to the two events scheduled for that day. At the end you will do a red-light purple light activity, this should always happen even if you don't finish the events because this is how they will start practicing emotional regulation skills. The red-light purple light game may take a bit the first few times but after a while it will only take about ten minutes to do the whole thing.
Based on the focus group from the 2022/2023 school year not much was recorded so please add additional procedures as they become apparent!
