John 8:12-20
Dispute Over Jesus’ Testimony
12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
13 The Pharisees challenged him, “Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid.”
14 Jesus answered, “Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going. 15 You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one. 16 But if I do judge, my decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me. 17 In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true. 18 I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me.”
19 Then they asked him, “Where is your father?”
“You do not know me or my Father,” Jesus replied. “If you knew me, you would know my Father also.” 20 He spoke these words while teaching in the temple courts near the place where the offerings were put. Yet no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come.
There was a dispute over Jesus' testimony...Jesus says words that are in our vocabulary and words we normally understand, but there is some dispute here on what He is saying...He is talking about Himself and His Father...
The Father and Son are divine...They are Spirit...Our words and our language and our writings are greatly stretched when we try to describe the Father and Son...Jesus spoke and talked about God more than anyone...But what did He tell us about God?...How much do we learn from Jesus about God and His words?...Jesus spoke often in parables...But Jesus did not say God was this and that...Even when Jesus spoke of His Father, we still have trouble understanding these things...And sadly, when we cannot understand things, we will not believe these things (that we don't understand)...So some of us will not believe in the Father and Son, because we cannot understand Spirit and Divinity...
Like the fruit of the Holy Spirit, God is LOVE...The other fruits help describe Him...God is Joy, Kind, Peace, Patience, Good, Gentle, Faithful, and has Complete Self-Control...And as Jesus says be perfect, as God is Perfect...
Jesus spoke more around God, in trying to explain Him...He often said things like -I AM in the Father, The Father is the One who sent Me...The Father has not left Me alone...I stand with the Father...You judge by human standards, and I pass judgment on no One...If these statements are confusing, I think, it because God is infinite...Jesus told us what God is like, and not what He is...I think that Jesus gave us our best understanding of His Father...It is hard for us to understand the Infinite God...Again, it is hard for us to understand spirit, truth, soul, divinity, and infinity...
Because God is infinite, it is hard to understand a lot about God...We only can understand a slice of Him...Pray that our understanding not get in the way of our faith...Let us believe in something greater and One that is beyond our understanding...Job teaches us that God is great, and beyond our understanding (Job 36:26)...God's ways, His knowledge, His wisdom, and His experiences are infinitely higher than ours...God tells us that My thoughts are not your thoughts, and neither are My ways are not your ways (Isaiah 55:6-8)...His wisdom is certainly not our wisdom...Let us remember, the Father and Son are eternal, and we are not, here are earth...
