Tim Jarvis

Tim Jarvis was born on July 31, 1964, the son of trainer Alan Jarvis. He served his apprenticeship on the Flat with his father and achieved success in that sphere, riding 24 winners before increasing weight saw him turn his attention to the winter game.

He had his first mount over jumps on his father’s Star Of Ireland in the Tante Claire Novices’ Hurdle at Sandown on January 7, 1984 and almost made the perfect start, being in with every chance when falling at the last flight.

The highlight of Tim’s 1984/85 season was winning four races in a row on his father’s novice chaser Kamir, at Towcester, Huntingdon and Warwick in April, completing the four-timer at Uttoxeter in May.

Tim rode just two winners in the 1985/86 season, both of them on his father’s Burannpour, landing a Nottingham novices’ chase in November, followed by the Steel Plate & Sections Young Chasers Novices’ Chase Qualifier at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day 1986.

In February 1987 Tim came within half a length of winning the Gay Record Challenge Trophy Chase at Folkestone on Gala Prince. However, he had a far more memorable experience on that same horse at Aintree five weeks later when completing the course in the 1987 Grand National, coming home 20th of the 22 finishers.

That pretty much marked the end of Tim’s riding career. He rode no winners the following season and hung up his boots and saddle not long afterwards.
