Peter Jones

Peter Jones – born 1936

Amateur rider Peter Michael Jones – not to be confused with professional jockey Peter Abel Harding Jones, who was active at the same time – was born on July 26, 1936.

He rode his first winner on the grey mare Pearl White, owned by his father and trained by Frank Cundell, who trained at Aston Tirrold, in the Moderate Hurdle at Worcester on March 25, 1957. Unplaced on their next start together, Peter and Pearl White resumed winning ways in a handicap hurdle at Chepstow’s Easter meeting on April 23.

Peter’s father then took out a permit for the 1957/58 season and trained Pearl White himself. Peter won three more races on him during that campaign. They scored only once during the 1958/59 season but that was in the rarefied heights of Cheltenham when landing the Northleach Handicap Hurdle on New Year’s Eve 1958, a victory that Peter rated among the highlights of his time in the saddle.

On July 22, 1961 Peter married Margaret Talbot. They lived at Staunton, Gloucestershire ans went on to have two sons, Paul and Martin.

His three wins in the 1963/64 season were all gained on handicap hurdler Rock Pansy, owned and trained by his father. He won four hurdle races between April 1965 and March 1968 on Gravitation for Redmarley, Gloucestershire trainer Bob Brazington.

He went on to ride a total of 26 winners under National Hunt rules, the last two being gained on the eight-year-old mare Rose Q.C., also trained by Brazington. The first of those was at Worcester on April 26, 1973, which resulted in Peter losing his 3lb allowance. Nine days later the mare defied a 7lb penalty by winning the Leamington Handicap Hurdle at Warwick on May 7 to give Peter his 26th and final success.
