Robert Johnson

c1788 - 1852


A rough-spoken, taciturn man, Bob Johnson was born in Sunderland.

He won many races on Dr Syntax.

He also won the St Leger four times - Otterington (1812), Ebor (1817), Reveller (1818) & St Patrick (1820).

He took up training after the 1836 Doncaster Gold Cup and was responsible for the great Beeswing.

Bob married the daughter of trainer Lonsdale.

Bob died in June, 1852, aged 64, and was buried at Coverham Churchyard.
