Harry Jones

(1923 - 1992)

Northern Flat jockey Harold (Harry) Jones was born in 1923. He was based in Malton for most of his career but did have a spell in the South, where he partnered some of the Duke of Norfolk’s horses trained at Arundel.

He is not to be confused with Ebor Handicap-winning jockey Herbert Jones, who was around at the same time. Herbert was actually christened Harold, but as there was already a jockey named Harold (Harry) Jones riding at the time, the Jockey Club changed his name to Herbert to avoid confusion. Thus, during the 1950s they were listed in the newspapers as Harry Jones and Herbert Jones.

Harry was the less successful of the two. During his career he had some 500 rides and about 20 winners. They included one over hurdles, that being on Young Carver for Royston trainer Willie Stephenson in the Long Distance Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day 1952.

His last three wins came in 1954, all for Malton trainer William Bellerby. He rode the two-year-old Christopher Robin to score at Newcastle on Easter Monday, April 19, following up with victory at Ripon on May 1. His final success came on another two-year-old, Seven Spades, at Stockton on June 5, 1954.

He relinquished his licence in 1956 but made a brief, albeit unsuccessful, return to race-riding in 1969.

Harry Jones died in February 1992, aged 58. The funeral took place on March 3 at Rose Hill Crematorium, Doncaster.
