Shrewsbury Jones

c1873 - 1950

Welsh National Hunt jockey Shrewsbury Treasure Jones was born circa 1873. He started out as an amateur and had his first ride, Warcraft, at Haverfordwest on April 25, 1889, finishing unplaced.

He rode his first winner on the second day of the Carmarthenshire Hunt fixture, Thursday, February 6, 1890, aboard Warcraft in the Consolation Plate. This was a steeplechase confined to horses that had run but failed to win during the two-day meeting. Earlier that afternoon, Shrewsbury had ridden Warcraft in the Borough Members’ Hunters’ Chase but his mount had refused.

He enjoyed his most successful year in 1892 with a score of eight wins, which prompted him to turn professional in April 1893. Over the next three years he rode with success at various South Wales venues, accumulating eight wins at Tenby, six at Carmarthen and six more at Pembroke.

He rode a total of 29 winners over jumps, the last of them on Village Belle (below) in the County Selling Chase at Pembroke Hunt on Wednesday, March 18, 1896. He had four mounts that day, which included a second and a third.

He had what proved to be his final two rides the following month at the Tivyside Chases fixture on April 15, 1896, emerging unscathed from a fall off Nora in the Tivyside Handicap Chase to come home last of four finishers on Antique in the Selling Hurdle.

Shrewsbury Jones died on March 1, 1950.
