Edward William Jones rode five winners under National Hunt rules in the late 1930s. He had his first success at Windsor on February 23, 1938, when Lac D’Annecy landed the Berkshire Hurdle. The seven-year-old was trained by Owen Anthony and was winning for the first time. With Edward, his regular partner, in the saddle, they beat Blunderbuss, the mount of George Burry, by one and a half lengths.

He had to wait until September 29 for another victory when the five-year-old Eliza, also trained by Own Anthony, won the Stewards’ Selling Handicap Hurdle at Perth, finishing three lengths in front of Albert Jenkins on Beneficiary.

Edward notched his third success when Eliza scored again, taking the Sussex Selling Handicap Hurdle at Lingfield Park on February 11, 1939. The mare then finished second three times before winning again under Edward, this time taking the Torre Cup Handicap Hurdle on the Tuesday of Torquay’s Easter meeting, the pair having finished second in the Ladies’ Handicap Hurdle there the previous day.

Eliza also gave Edward his fifth, and final, victory when beating Grey Monarch, ridden by the good amateur Herbert Applin, by a head in the Buckfast Handicap Hurdle at Buckfastleigh on Tuesday, May 30, 1939, the second day of Buckfastleigh’s traditional Whitsun meeting.

Edward continued to partner Eliza throughout the following season, being placed three times from seven starts. He held a licence until jump racing was suspended during the war. He died in 2005.
