Clem Jenkins

American jockey Clement Jenkins, a native of California, made an immediate impact when scoring on his first mount in England, Sardonic 11, in the Newmarket October Handicap on Wednesday, 26 Thursday, 1900. A frivolous objection to his mount was quickly overruled. A second and remaining mount of the afternoon was Ninon in the Fifty-second Triennial: Clem won on this, too.

Aged 24, Clem had been riding for some five seasons and, in America, had won several times on King's Courier. Going to scale at 7st. 7lb., he has already won 80 times in 1900 back in the States before debuting at Newmarket.

On a £2,000 per year contract, he rode with great success for King Edward and had many other notable wins riding for the nobility of France.

In his first season in England, Clem rode 7 winners from 86 mounts. In 1901 he won 42 races from 332, including Revenue, which took the Duke of York Stakes at Kempton. In the following year he rode 17 winners, including Fowlingpiece in the Newmarket Stakes.

Clem Jenkins died in San Francisco on Saturday, 5 December, 1908, suffering from appendicitis.
