Norman Jones

David Norman Jones, shown in most result as ‘N. Jones’, had five winners under National Hunt rules, beginning with a victory on Custodian, trained by Tom Rimell, in the Novices’ Hurdle (Division II) at Hereford on May12, 1949. Taking the lead before the final flight, he ran on to beat Wayward Star, the mount of Paddy Conlon, by a length.

He started the following season in good style with a double at Newton Abbot on September 9, initiated by Custodian in the Manaton Selling Handicap Hurdle, and completed by Massicle in the Haytor Handicap Hurdle, both trained by Tom Rimell. Then on October 6, he and Custodian won their third race together, the King’s Acre Handicap Hurdle at Hereford. Their sole opponent was Passifyoucan, partnered by Len Stephens, who had finished second to Massicle at Newton Abbot. Now he was beaten by Massicle’s stable companion.

Norman did not hold a licence in the 1950/51 and 51/52 seasons, the reason for that almost certainly being due to undertaking his National Service, which was compulsory in those days. Hence, he did not return to race-riding until the 1952/53 season, but he made a quick start when, on October 25, 1952, he rode Rattlaway to win the Penlee Hurdle at Bangor-on-Dee. The four-year-old had shown nothing in his three races the previous season, but now, with Norman in the saddle for the first time and making his seasonal reappearance, he beat Violin by three lengths. For that win, Norman was listed as ‘D. N. Jones’.

Norman rode Rattlaway on his next three starts, managing one third-place finish, but he relinquished his licence the following season.
