Steve Jobar

Robert Steven Jobar – who rode as S. Jobar – was born in Sheffield on March 29, 1949.

Apprenticed to Alec Kilpatrick, he rode his first winner on 20-1 outsider Stickler in the Brighton Handicap Hurdle (Division 1) at Fontwell Park on November 28, 1968.

He achieved a notable success on 7-2 favourite Our Edition, owned by Colonel Bill Whitbread and trained by Stan Mellor, in the Weetabix (now Freebooter) Handicap Chase at the Aintree on April 1, 1977, the day before Red Rum galloped to his historic third Grand National triumph.

Steve enjoyed his biggest day on 40-1 shot Heighlin, trained by David Elsworth, in the 1980 Triumph Hurdle. He also finished second on Heighlin in the 1981 Cesarewitch, his only ride on the Flat.

Heighlin was the best he rode during his career. The second best was another Elsworth-trained horse, Combs Ditch, on which Steve won a Cheltenham novices’ hurdle on New Year’s Day 1981.

He rode in three Grand Nationals – on Inycarra (1977), Pacify (1981) and Cold Spell (1982) – but failed to complete the course.

After retiring, he became a builder and carpenter.

Sadly, Steve is currently (2024) living with motor neurone disease.
