Syd Jones

National Hunt jockey Sydney Jones rode 60 winners between 1909 and 1927 including one at Cheltenham’s National Hunt Meeting.

He got off to an unfortunate start when his first ride in public, Stockwell Green, ran out in the Friday Selling Hurdle at Haydock Park on January 8, 1909. However, he was soon off the mark, riding Jenkins to victory in the Rugeley Selling Hurdle at Birmingham on February 8, 1909. He rode 11 winners the following year.

Prior to May 1915 he had been listed as ‘Sidney’ Jones but from thereon he was shown as ‘Sydney’ with a Y. His career was compromised by World War One and it was during the first half of the 1920s that he enjoyed his most successful period.

He equalled his best score of 11 wins for a calendar year in 1920, recording a treble at Southwell on September 13 aboard Singwell (5-1) in the Southwell Selling Handicap Hurdle, Golden System (5-1) in the Rainsworth Hunters’ Handicap Chase, and Balerno (10-1) in the Upton Optional Selling Chase.

He again rode 11 winners in 1922, including his most important success on Tally-Ho in the Swindon Selling Chase at Cheltenham’s National Hunt Meeting.

Syd rode his last winner on a horse with the questionable name of Ubeoff in the Stanton Selling Hurdle at Wolverhampton on December 27, 1924. He continued to ride until May 1926 when relinquishing his licence.

He made a surprise comeback in November 1935 and continued to ride for the next 18 months but without success. He appeared for the final time when finishing unplaced on the 12-year-old Busy Bee in the Morville Selling Handicap Hurdle at Bridgnorth on May 22, 1937.
