Born on 25 August 1983, jump jockey Daryl Jacob grew up in Davidstown, near Enniscorthy, County Wexford, where his father was a landscaper. One of five children, he attended St Mary’s Primary School in Enniscorthy and Kilkenny Collage. He learnt to ride on ponies owned by a neighbour and left school to work at the yard of Dessie Hughes.
After moving from Ireland to Britain initially to ride out Flat horses for Richard Hannon, he joined Robert and Sally Alner’s Dorset stable in 2003 and rode his first winner under rules on 25/1 outsider Orbicularis for Alison Thorpe in the City of Exeter Amateur Riders’ Handicap Hurdle at Exeter on 18 December 2003.
He landed the first Grade 1 win on The Listener, trained by the Alners, in the Lexus Chase at Leopardstown in December 2006 while still a conditional jockey. He steered The Listener to an eight-length victory over Beef Or Salmon, who had won the race, now known as the Savills Chase, in three of the four previous years, with that year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup winner War Of Attrition back in third.
The pair went on to win the John Durkan Chase at Punchestown in 2007 and the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup (now called the Irish Gold Cup) at Leopardstown in 2008.
Daryl had his first Grade 1 win in Britain on Me Voici, trained by Nick Williams, in the Finale Juvenile Hurdle at Chepstow on 28 December 2009. The following day he won another Grade 1, Newbury’s Challow Hurdle, for the same trainer on Reve De Sivola. He also rode Reve De Sivola to win a Grade 1 novice hurdle at the 2010 Punchestown festival. Later that year he won the Hennessy Gold Cup on another of Nick Williams’ horses, Diamond Harry.
In 2011 he joined Paul Nicholls as number two jockey to Ruby Walsh, and the trainer gave him his first Cheltenham Festival winner on Zarkandar in the 2011 Triumph Hurdle. In 2012 Nicholls provided him with the biggest success of his career when 33/1 shot Neptune Collonges landed the 2012 Grand National by a nose from Sunnyhillboy, becoming the first grey horse to win the world’s most famous steeplechase since Nicolas Silver in 1961.
When Walsh left Nicholls in 2013, Daryl briefly rode as the stable’s first jockey. However, the position lasted less than a year. He left in 2014 and elected to ride freelance and soon after became the retained jockey for owners Simon Munir and Isaac Souede, a position he retained for the remainder of his career. He enjoyed his beat season in 2016/17 with 91 winners.
Besides his major successes in Britain and Ireland for Munir and Souede, he also won the : Grande Course de Haies d’Auteuil (French Champion Hurdle) on L’Ami Serge in 2017 and claimed another Grade 1 with him at the following year’s Grand National meeting in the Aintree Hurdle.
Probably the best-known horse he rode in Munir and Suede’s dark and light green silks was the grey Bristol De Mai, trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies. Daryl won the Betfair Chase on him three times (2017, 2018, 2020) and finished third in the 2019 Cheltenham Gold Cup. He rode him in all but one of his nine Graded victories.
Another favourite to carry the double green colours was Sceau Royal, trained by Alan King. Daryl rode him in 42 of his 54 races, winning 15 times, including the Grade 1 Henry VIII Novices’ Chase, three Elite Hurdles, a Welsh Champion Hurdle, the Grade 2 Game Spirit Chase, Grade 2 Shloer Chase and successive wins in a Kempton Listed hurdle race.
His final Cheltenham Festival winner, Concertista, came for the same owners in the 2020 Mares’ Novices' Hurdle.
He spent most of 2024 on the sidelines with a collarbone injury but returned to ride his 1,000th winner in Britain, Ireland and France when Ottizzini made all to win a 3m½f handicap hurdle at Ayr on 2 November 2024.
On Saturday, 28 December 2024 he won the Grade 1 Faugheen Novice Chase at Limerick for owners Munir and Souede on Impaire Et Passe, trained by Willie Mullins, drawing clear on the run-in to win by four lengths. Daryl had already announced that it would be his last season as a jockey, but victory in that Grade 1 race prompted him to bring forward his retirement, announcing that he would finish the next day.
His final ride was on the Joseph O’Brien-trained Mr Percy for Munir and Souede at Leopardstown on 29 December 2024, coming home twelfth of 18 finishers in the Neville Hotels Premier Handicap Hurdle.
He retired having achieved 1,002 wins (963 in Britian, 30 in Ireland and 9 in France), including 31 at Grade 1 level.
