Sharron James

Article by Alan Trout

Sharron Elizabeth James rode under both codes during the 1980s and won ten races, three of them on the Flat, seven over jumps.

She was apprenticed to her father, former National Hunt jockey Mick James, and had her first ride at Devon & Exeter on August 8, 1984, when The Knife was beaten four lengths by Rheingold’s Gift in the Chudleigh Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle. After two unplaced efforts the pair struck at Worcester on September 6, landing the Hartlebury Selling Handicap Hurdle by a length and a half.

Six days later they beat two rivals at Bangor-on-Dee, going on to complete the hat-trick at Uttoxeter on September 27. Sharron had one more win over jumps that season, and opened her account on the Flat when Composer, trained by her father, had half a length to spare at the end of the Ribble Selling Stakes (Division 2) at Haydock Park on June 8, 1985.

Her last success on the Flat was at Pontefract on July 22, 1986, when Polemistis came through in the final furlong to beat Mr Coffey, the mount of Paul Eddery, in the Bradley E.B.F. Stakes by a length and a half.

Jack Berry trained Sharron’s last two winners over jumps, providing her with her tenth victory when Arcville Fred narrowly held the challenge of Tromeros by a neck in the Whitbread Tenants Handicap Hurdle. The 32lb the winner was receiving from the runner-up undoubtedly influenced the result.
