Martin Jones

National Hunt jockey Martin Jones was born on October 10, 1966, the son of amateur rider Peter Jones, who rode 26 winners between 1957 and 1973.

Martin held a licence from 1987 to 1994 and rode primarily for trainers Robin Dickin and Chris Popham. He rode his first winner on 9-1 chance Polish, trained by Dickin, in the Coral Golden Handicap Hurdle Qualifier at Nottingham on December 21, 1987. He rode six winners from 75 mounts during that 1987/88 season.

In January 1989 he won two conditional jockeys’ handicap chases within eight days on Mount Oliver, also trained by Dickin. He registered nine wins from 128 mounts for the 1989/90 campaign, six of them trained by Popham.

He enjoyed a good season in 1990/91, riding 11 winners from 90 mounts, seven of them trained by Dickin. They included handicap chaser Rambling Echo at Huntingdon on November 16, novice chaser Miss Fern at Plumpton on November 21, and handicap hurdler Five Lamps at Southwell on February 25.

However, the best horse Martin rode during his career was the mare Flakey Dove, who went on to win the Champion Hurdle. Martin rode her just once, at Chepstow on March 14, 1992, finishing second in a Chepstow handicap hurdle.

Martin Jones rode a total of 50 winners during his time in the saddle.
